Alexandria has asked the state's Department of Motor Vehicles to withhold registration renewals on any vehicle registered in the commonwealth with a delinquent City of Alexandria parking ticket.
Once a hold is in place, the vehicle owner will be required to pay the delinquent balance, plus an additional $20 administrative fee per hold before DMV will renew a vehicle registration.
Three delinquent citation fines could result in a boot on the vehicle by the Police Department, according to the city.
The city can collect both delinquent personal property taxes and delinquent parking citations related to vehicles owned by city residents.
A statement from the city says Alexandria can increase the collection rate for $360,000 in unpaid fines and late penalties on 4,500 parking citations issued since Jan. 1, 2010, related to vehicles from other jurisdictions that parked illegally in the city.
Vehicle owners may contest their parking citations in person by presenting their driver’s license at the Administrative Adjudication Office, 421 King Street, Suite 500, Alexandria, VA 22314, Monday through Friday, between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.; by submitting the online form available through the Parking Tickets link at alexandriava.gov/finance or by writing to the Citation Processing Center, P.O. Box 1423, Alexandria, VA 22313-1423.
If the adjudicator finds the registered owner guilty or reduces the fine, a $10 adjudication fee will be added to the fine. If the ticket is released, no additional fee will be charged.
