Fundraising for Alexandria's Mayoral Race Begins to Take Off

As of June 30, incumbent Mayor Bill Euille raised about $26,000 to competitor Andrew Macdonald's $17,000.

Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille has an almost $10,000 lead in campaign contributions for the November general election over Andrew Macdonald, who is running for the .

Euille raised $26,180 to Macdonald's $16,798, according to the Virginia Public Access Project and reported by The Washington Post.

"Many of the mayor's contributions came from law firms, real estate concerns and retirees; much of Macdonald's support from retirees active in the waterfront anti-development movement," reports the Post's Virginia Politics blog.

Macdonald co-founded Citizens for an Alternative Alexandria Waterfront Plan, a to rezoning the city's riverside to allow hotels there. Euille is an avid supporter of the city's Waterfront Small Area Plan.

Euille told the Post he expects to raise much more money. Macdonald's campaign noted that he started his campaign three months after Euille. In the period from April through June, Macdonald, who holds a fundraiser Tuesday evening, outraised his competitor three-to-one.
