Lovain Announces Candidacy for City Council

Former Democratic councilmember Tim Lovain is making another run at City Council.

Tim Lovain announced his Democratic candidacy for Alexandria City Council on Tuesday with an eye on smart growth, education, environment and fiscal matters for the city.

“I was deeply honored to serve one prior term as an Alexandria councilmember,” he said in a statement. “I am proud of the contributions I made to our community’s accomplishments during those years, and I look forward to the opportunity to be of further assistance to our great city.”

Lovain added that during the past two-and-a-half years he has spent quality family time and focused on his work as a transportation policy consultant as well as joining the boards of Stop Child Abuse Now of Northern Virginia, At Home in Alexandria, North Ridge Citizens Association, and becoming the chairman of the Northern Virginia Streetcar Coalition.

“I believe these experiences will help me be a better member of Council,” he said.

“I have become a very strong believer in the principles of smart growth and transit-oriented development, principles that have proven to improve the quality of life in communities while reducing car traffic,” he said. “Our neighbors in Arlington, Washington, D.C., and Maryland are committed to these principles, and it’s time for Alexandria to match their commitment.”

Lovain mentioned that he is proud to have three daughters in Alexandria City Public Schools. “I think it’s very important to have the perspective of an ACPS parent on Council,” he said. “I have seen first hand how vital it is to provide a quality education and resource support to all students to ensure a successful future for Alexandria.”

Lovain was chair of the City’s Budget and Fiscal Affairs Advisory Committee and said he looks “forward to getting back to going over that budget line-by-line with a sharp pencil and a fine-tooth comb!”

Lastly, he said environment is a priority:“I am also eager to continue my efforts to protect our environment, for example, by reducing the use of plastic bags and increasing efforts to clean up the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay.”
