Old Health Department Fetches $5.23 Million

City unloads surplus property to local developer.

Alexandria City Council approved the sale Tuesday of the city-owned Old Health Department property located at 509 N. Saint Asaph St. and 511, 513 and 515 Oronoco St. to local developer Y-12 Investments for $5.23 million.

Proceeds from the sale will go toward funding the city's capital improvement program. Y-12 Investments will also make a $100,943 contribution to the city’s affordable housing fund.

Still in the concept phase, the plan includes preserving the Old Health Department in its current footprint but dividing it into nine townhomes. The façade and many architectural features will be retained.

The plan includes installing rooftop terraces on the north and south wings of the building and constructing seven new townhomes at the Oronoco site.

The redevelopment proposal is expected to go through the city’s approval process in the fall.
