Update: Roadwork on Outer Loop Local Lanes This Weekend

Use alternate routes the weekend of June 22 - 25 and beyond on the "local lanes" side of the Outer Loop of the Beltway in the greater Alexandria area.

Update: This work was delayed until the weekend of June 22 - 25 due to weather.

This weekend, workers from the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project will be shifting the THRU/LOCAL lanes on the Outer Loop (I-495 eastbound), leaving only one single travel lane open on the local side for several weeks.

The work may create backups over the weekend on the Outer Loop, and officials are very strongly encouraging drivers to avoid the construction area if they can.

According to a release from the Virginia Megaprojects team:

Weather permitting, the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project is planning to shift the THRU/LOCAL split on the Capital Beltway Outer Loop the weekend of June 15-18 to just west of the Eisenhower Connector, after the Van Dorn exit in Virginia, to allow for final paving of the Outer Loop THRU and LOCAL lanes.

Importantly, once the split is relocated on June 18, motorists will have access to the new Outer Loop THRU lanes in their final alignment, but be restricted to one LOCAL lane from the split to just past Telegraph Road until approximately July 23, when all lanes reopen in their final configuration. This work is expected to cause significant backups for Beltway and local traffic, and motorists are strongly advised to seek alternate routes to avoid delays. Only motorists who need to access Telegraph Road, U.S. Route 1 or I-295/National Harbor should use the single LOCAL lane; all other travelers are advised to use the THRU lanes, which will be able to exit at the MD 210 interchange.

Please use caution when traveling in this area. All construction-related work and dates are subject to change, depending on weather, material and contractor availability or other unforeseen conditions.  Go to www.wilsonbridge.com for the latest traffic and project information.
