Virginia High Court to Hear Waterfront Appeal in June
The Virginia Supreme Court agreed in October 2012 to hear the appeal of three residents protesting zoning and other changes made by the city.
The Virginia Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the latest appeal on the city’s plans to redevelop its riverside.
Currently, the court is scheduled to hear oral arguments June 6 on the appeal made by three women who reside near the waterfront—April Burke, Beth Gibney and Marie Kux.
The three women—whom supporters refer to as the “Iron Ladies”—appealed a March 16, 2012 decision by the Alexandria Circuit Court. The lower court ruled that City Council took proper action in voting to approve the waterfront plan and related zoning changes.

The Supreme Court last October agreed to hear the women’s appeal.

The women argue that council should not have approved the plan because it did not follow an appropriate process. Among many complaints, they say Alexandria’s planning and zoning director should have processed their zoning protest before the council’s January 2012 5-2 vote on the waterfront plan.
