What Do You Want to See on Alexandria's Waterfront?

City to host second meeting concerning landscape design and flood mitigation elements of its waterfront plan.

Alexandria is hosting its second in a series of community meetings to discuss the landscape and flood mitigation design aspects of its waterfront redevelopment plan from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4 at T.C. Williams High School.

The Olin Studio, the landscape architectural firm the city hired for the waterfront plan, will provide detailed information on the waterfront landscape design process. The meeting will also serve as a forum to share ideas about the public space elements of the plan, the use of those public spaces, and ways to incorporate art, history and lighting design into the plan.

The design process of the plan is expected to be complete in June 2014. The city has more information about the design process on its website.

Nearly 200 people attended the first meeting in the series in mid October, where famed landscape architect Laurie Olin discussed the designs of successful waterfronts around the United States.

“It has good bones,” Olin said of Alexandria’s riverside, according to the Alexandria Times. “It needs to be better. It needs to be a better waterfront.”

The city will hold a public hearing on Nov. 19 to discuss options for implementing the waterfront plan in regards to the Old Dominion Boat Club’s parking lot near the foot of King Street and adjacent areas, including the use of eminent domain.

Mayor Bill Euille has called the parking lot “the missing link” in the city’s plan for waterfront redevelopment, crucial for assuring connectivity and public access along the shore of the Potomac.

T.C. Williams High School is located at 3330 King St. Monday’s meeting will be held in the school’s auditorium, which can be accessed through entrance No. 36, located near the school’s parking structure.

The meeting is open to the public.
