School Board Votes to Release Superintendent

Superintendent Morton Sherman will receive about $281,500 per his request for early retirement. An acting super has been named.

The School Board of Alexandria City Public Schools voted Thursday evening to release Superintendent Morton Sherman from the remainder of his contract per his request for an early retirement.

(Editor's Note: Dr. Sherman's letter is attached to this story as a PDF.)

The contract would have ended June 30, 2015. The board voted to pay 39 percent of the remaining contract months or $222,261 plus earned paid leave time valued at $59,246.

The board appointed Margaret "Margee" Walsh to assume immediately the role of acting superintendent until an interim superintendent is named. The interim superintendent would remain in that position until the board finds a permanent replacement.

Walsh currently is chief policy and student services officer and she represents ACPS on some city committees.

The board plans to hold a work session and public hearing in September to begin engaging the community on the superintendent search.
