State Suspends Funding on ACPS Adult Ed Program

Program has been under investigation by the state for irregularities.

Virginia is suspending funding to the public school system's adult education program amid charges that there t by Alexandria City Public School officials in helping prepare students for the GED test.

State education spokesman Charles Pyle told The Washington Examiner that Virginia is suspending funding of about $97,000 that Alexandria was scheduled to receive from grants. Alexandria has already spent its $22,000 allocation on adult education from the state.

Kent Dickey, Virginia's deputy superintendent for finance and operations, told the Examiner that ACPS acknowledged some violations of its assessment policies in a letter to Superintendent Morton Sherman.

The adult education program will proceed as scheduled for the rest of the year, and an ACPS spokeswoman said the school system "believes Virginia will reimburse Alexandria when it cleans itself up," according to the Examiner article.
