T.C. Williams Crew Teams to Take On Rival Washington-Lee

Rivalry kicks off 2014 season.

The T.C. Williams Crew team kicks off the season Saturday with a home regatta against rival Washington-Lee.

“We’ve got a good nucleus of kids coming back,” Pete Stramese, the head coach of the T.C. Williams boys team, said in a news release. “Whenever you have returning veterans, you have kids capable of providing leadership because they’ve been there before.”

T.C. Williams Head Girls Coach Patrick Marquardt agreed. “This is one of the largest senior classes we’ve had in a while,” Marquardt, who won the state championship last year as Coach of the T.C. Freshman girls and is in his first year guiding all of the Titan girls, said in the statement.  “But we’re also fortunate because we have a good number of juniors and sophomores coming back."

Returning seniors on this year’s T.C. Williams Crew team include: Kate Arnold, Maria Betances, Ben Blakeslee, Nate Conrad, Conor Ferris, Spenser Gilliand, Calvin Heimberg, Alexis Judd, Greg Montenegro, Rosa Procaccino, Toavina Ratolo,  Julet Roque, George Waskowicz, and Sam Zickar.

Other returning seniors include Katie Pickup, who has signed a letter of intent to row for the University of Wisconsin, and Noah Stewart, who was one of the most heavily recruited rowers in the nation and will be competing for the Naval Academy Midshipmen next year.

The rivalry between the T.C. Williams and W-L crews is one of the oldest in the area, dating back to 1949.  Saturday’s regatta will be held at the Dee Campbell Boathouse in Old Town.  Racing gets underway at 7:00 am.

Following the regatta, members of the crew, their families, and friends will hold a ceremony to christen the newest shell in the T.C. Williams racing fleet, the “Wanda Carol Street.”  The shell is named after the current treasurer of the Alexandria Crew Boosters and longtime supporter of the Titan rowing program.
