New Restaurant Opening Soon in Old Town Alexandria

Focus will be on medieval times in both menu and decor.

A new restaurant with a medieval focus in decor and its menu is coming to King Street in Old Town Alexandria.

John Strongbow's Tavern will be located at 710 King St., according to consultant Tom Booth. The restaurant is taking the place of Las Tapas, which closed in March. The owners are hoping to open the restaurant by June 1, Booth noted.

The restaurant will feature as much locally sourced foods as possible, serving a menu that will likely include prime rib, halibut, roasted duck and wild game, Booth said. The restaurant will serve historic beers and wines.

The restaurant's chef is Steve Helferd, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and former chef at Duke's Bar & Grill/The Windsor Room in Old Town.

The decor will feature handcrafted furniture and murals by artist Beth Ross of West Virginia. The restaurant may feature live entertainment, Booth said.

The hours will be from 11 a.m. to midnight.
