For the first time in school history, the Bishop Ireton’s Girls' Lacrosse team won the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) championship by a resounding 17 – 7 over defending champion Good Counsel.

The Cardinals have made four previous appearances at the WCAC championship level; losing to PVI in 2004 and three times to Good Counsel, including a double overtime championship game in 2009.

The Ireton team is composed of two seniors who are both playing lacrosse in college. Kendall Cunningham will be attending Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn. and Olivia Cole, the goalie, signed a National Letter of Intent to play at the University of Florida.

Kendall Cunningham, said: "I couldn't be more proud of our team. We have worked so hard in the offseason and holding up that trophy at the end just reassured us that it was not an accident."

The leading scorer with six goals and one assist, junior Kelly Mathews said: “We fought hard as a team and pulled together to accomplish what we have been working for since July. We wanted to win it for the seniors and it feels awesome to finally get out what we put in.”

The Cardinals now face Norfolk Academy in the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association play-offs.
