Chinquapin Park Rec Center Closing Delayed

Alexandria parks officials have delayed the closing date for Chinquapin Park Recreation Center by more than a month.

The facility, located next the T.C. Williams High School on King Street, was originally scheduled to close May 6 for repairs and improvements, a staff member said. The center will now close for day-to-day operations June 17 and should reopen in the fall.

Staff members are trying to lessen the closure’s inconvience to community members, city officials said in a news release, but said the scope of the facility improvements requires full closure to ensure public safety, reduce costs and shorten the construction period.

Chinquapin Park Recreation Center will operate on the following schedule:

• May 6 through June 16, normal operating hours. This includes:

  • 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday

• May 27: closed for Memorial Day

• May 28 through June 16, restricted hours. This includes:

  • 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday

  • 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday

  • 8 a.m. to noon Saturday

The city has relocated many of Chinquapin’s programs:

• All camps normally scheduled for the summer will operate at Francis C. Hammond Middle School.

• All “land” classes normally scheduled for the summer will operate at other Department facilities. Visit this webpage for class listings.

• Swim lessons normally scheduled at Chinquapin will operate at the outdoor pools.
