Kelley Cares Miracle Field Poised for Play

The official dedication of the Kelley Cares Miracle Field is set for Saturday evening at the Nannie J. Lee Recreation Center.

The ceremony begins at 5 p.m., followed by a demonstration game with participants in the Miracle Baseball League of Alexandria. City officials and other community members also will play a whiffle ball game during the event.

The field is a rubberized surface baseball diamond enabling people with special needs the opportunity to play outdoor sports in a quality environment, also allowing wheelchairs and walkers to be used safely.

A Wall of Fame has been erected to recognize field donors and a local artist will paint a mural, incorporating features from therapeutic recreation classes, on a nearby building.

The Kelley Cares Miracle Field was created through a public/private partnership. The city contributed $285,000, the Miracle League of Alexandria raised more than $150,000 from the private sector and construction firms donated almost $150,000 in services to the project. Donations ranged from $2 to $40,000.
