The 29th annual GW Parkway Classic 10 Miler and 5K went off without a hitch.
In all, 4,839 runners completed the 10-mile race, which began at Mount Vernon and ended at Oronoco Bay Park along Union Street in the City of Alexandria.

The recent Boston Marathon bombings prompted increased security at the event. Thousands of runners and spectators attended, yet that cheer at the finish line was quieter than usual, as the final yards were blocked off from all but runners. Police also sealed city trash cans and checked the bags of attendees.

The race took place less than a week after the Boston bombings, and some runners wore blue and yellow ribbons, the colors of the race, in remembrance of the victims.

This year's Parkway Classic also honored Alexandria Police Officer Peter Laboy, who was shot during a traffic stop in Old Town in February and is now recovering. Local police took donations for Laboy, who is recuperating.
