Registration Now Open for 2012 Alexandria Turkey Trot

The standard entry fee for the Nov. 22 race is $20.

Registration is now open online for the 2012 Alexandria Turkey Trot, which will begin for the second straight year at George Washington Middle School on Thanksgiving morning.

The standard race entry fee is $20. Registration for runners ages 13 to 20 is $15, while children under 13 can register for $5. Runners may also purchase a long-sleeve cotton T-shirt or a short-sleeve technical T-shirt for an extra $10 with their registration.

Online registrants have the option of making a donation to race benefactor ALIVE!, a nonprofit organization consisting of volunteers from more than 40 religious congregations and community groups working to help Alexandrians in need.

This year’s race will once again have special fields for runners with strollers and runners with leashed dogs.

The 5-mile race is presented by the Del Ray Business Association and DC Road Runners. The event is the DRBA’s biggest fundraiser of the year. More than 4,600 runners registered for the 2011 race.

DRBA officer John Reynolds said the race will likely be moved to a 9 a.m. start time on Nov. 22 as opposed to the traditional 10 a.m. starting gun because of a request by the city, though the permit still needs to be worked out.

Reynolds also said the finish line may be moved behind George Washington Middle School, but that also remains to be determined.

Del Ray Patch will pass on information about the start time, course and other particulars in the weeks ahead.

Or...I just happen to like good coffee, good pizza, coffee shops that are open in the morning, feces- free grocery markets and many, many, other "unreasonable" things.

"5 mile race around the neighborhood." Sounds so much more quaint than "4600 strangers descending on my block the morning of Thanksgiving." FWIW- last year my lawn saw people relieve themselves on it and leave trash behind, while my neighbors stated that someone actually parked in my driveway.

Or, you just like to complain.

Because you wouldn't if a stranger took a dump next to your AC unit?

I'm going to suspend comments on this article because I feel the dialogue isn't headed in a meaningful direction. We'll have more info about the Turkey Trot in the weeks ahead once the final route and start time are determined. I'll try to address the concerns raised in this thread about street closures in a future article.
