Male Mentors Needed for Program This Fall

"Mentor one child and change two lives. You won't regret it."

Space of His Own (SOHO), an Alexandria creative mentoring program, is looking for diverse adult males to help mentor local youth. The program, sponsored by Alexandria’s Juvenile Court Services and Seaport Foundation, meets throughout the school year Wednesday evenings, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. providing fifth-grade boys in need of positive adult male role models with one-to-one mentoring.

Through hands-on activities such as carpentry, fishing and sports activities, SOHO teaches valuable life skills and provides healthy meals. Similar to its sister program, Space of Her Own, the program culminates in June with a renovation of each boy’s bedroom.

SOHO is seeking 12 "diverse, fun and caring adult males" to start the program in September. No mentoring or carpentry experience is required; training will be provided. SOHO's motto: "Mentor one child and change two lives. You won’t regret it."

Interested potential mentors can register for an upcoming mentor orientation; dates are Wednesday, August 28 or Sept. 4 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Seaport Foundation, located at 2 Duke St., in Alexandria.
