Mutts Matter: Gentle Jack

Meet Jack, a loving and loyal border collie-pointer mix who is ready to be your co-pilot.

Hi, guys! My name is Jack, and look no further because I’m the complete pup package. I’m smart, affectionate, a great housemate, and always up for a new adventure.

I’m a border collie-pointer mix, about four-years-old, and I weigh in at 45 pounds. I was rescued as a stray down in South Carolina after I’d been hanging around an elderly man's house for a few months, hoping to find some food and shelter. A rescue veteran, Ms. Pam, heard my story, took me under her wing, and asked Mutts Matter to help me find the loving family I deserve.

I'm a perfect companion dog and very sweet, with the right mix of inside and outside personality. In the house, I'm very calm and love to be petted, and I’ll snuggle up right next to you as we watch TV. But, I also love the outdoors and can be as active as you want to be. I'm always up for a run, a walk, a hike, or just going foraging through the woods on the hunt for critters.

Mutts Matter found me a great foster family and I’m now living the good life in Reston. I have a foster mom and two twenty-something foster siblings, and I try to share my love with them equally. My foster sister, Sabrina, lets me sleep with her in bed sometimes, which I love. She also takes me on daily runs, and says I’m her personal motivator. I make sure she’s up every morning and that she knows I’m ready to go with a little nudge to get her attention. I've already learned how to pace with her and will make someone a great running partner.

My foster mom, Jasmine, takes me on daily walks in the afternoons, and sometimes lets me romp in the creek beds behind our house. She knows I’m happiest when I’m running through the woods, smelling all the scents and jumping in and out of the water to cool off. She rubs me down with a towel afterwards and brushes my fur, and I just love the attention.

In fact, my favorite thing in the world is to share affection. I love to be petted, and will let you know when the time is right (any time!) with a tap of my paw or a gentle nudge with my nose. My persistence in getting the most rubs possible from the most people is very entertaining to my foster family, and they appreciate that I know how to ask for what I want.

Yannick, my foster brother, is my official play partner and trainer. He’ll roughhouse and wrestle with me, but is also teaching me commands. I’ve already learned to sit, lay down, shake hands, and roll over to get my "Jack Snacks.” The one area I still need some work on is leash walking. It’s pretty new to me, and I can get excited on my walks and will pull a little, but I think we’ll figure it out.

My foster mom says I've been the perfect guest in her home. I greet company with ease, but will also give you a few quick barks to let you know when folks are coming. I haven’t had any accidents and I'm not destructive or a big chewer, not even with bones or toys. My entertainment is hanging out with my people and being loved. We did try the crate thing the first few days I was here, but I didn’t like that very much. I quickly proved to my foster mom that I could be trusted, so now I have free roam of the house and everybody’s happy.

I would fit best with an active or outdoorsy family who has time to spend with me and will provide a consistent routine, and make sure I get my daily exercise and belly rubs, of course. A home with a fenced yard for me to run and explore freely would be ideal, and I’d do well with kids or other dogs, both big and small.

I adore my people and will be the perfect companion pup for some lucky family.
