John Waters, Ask Your Legislators and the Bellefonte Wizards

Plus, a Great Gatsby cocktail party and the Moonshine Society.

Speak with your legislators — State Sens. Adam Ebbin (D-30th) and George Barker (D-39th) and Dels. Rob Krupicka (D-45th) and Charniele Herring (D-46th) will participate in a public hearing from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16 at Alexandria City Hall (301 King St.) to discuss the upcoming 2014 legislative session in Richmond. The event will give residents a chance to ask questions to their elected representatives.   

Cheer on the Wizards — The Bellefonte Wizards, a basketball team comprised of adults with intellectual disabilities living in city residential housing, will compete against staff from Alexandria’s Department of Community and Human Services at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16 at Cora Kelly Recreation Center (25 W. Reed Ave.).

The Wizards reached the state championships of the Virginia Special Olympics in March 2013 and have a three-year winning streak against the DCHS Shooting Stars in this annual rivalry game.

Great Gatsby Holiday Tasting Party — The Hour Cocktail Collection (1015 King St.) is hosting a Gatsby-themed (not Gadsby!) cocktail party from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17. Ticket proceeds benefit Carpenter’s Shelter. With paid admission, there will be a 15 percent discount on all items during the event. Tickets are $25 and are available at The Hour or by calling 703-224-4687 to make your reservation. Limited space is available.

A John Waters Christmas — The one and only film director, author, stand-up and visual artist rides his sleigh into the Birchmere (3701 Mount Vernon Ave.) on Wednesday, Dec. 18 for a one-man show beginning at 7:30 p.m. Expect Mr. Waters for put the “X” back in Xmas. Tickets are $49.50 and are available through the Birchmere website

Moonshine Society — This roots rock, blues and R&B band hits the Old Town Theater (815 King St.) stage at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18. The band, a regular presence at the 219 on King Street, will be joined on stage by saxophonist Ron Holloway. Tickets are $8 and are available through the Old Town Theater website. Doors open at 6 p.m.
