Redskins, Remembering 9/11 and 'Motormouth Jones'

Plus, Second Thursday and the return of City Council.

We’re looking at a busy week here in and around Old Town. Here are some events and other happenings to occupy your thoughts this week:

Are you ready for some football? — The Washington Redskins jump back into action Monday night when they host the Philadelphia Eagles. Robert Griffin III and the gang are looking to build on the success of last year’s campaign, which included an NFC East title and a berth in the playoffs. Kickoff is at 6:55 p.m. at FedEx Field in Landover, Md. If you don’t have tickets and are looking for a place to watch in Old Town, I’ve always liked catching games at Southside 815 (815 S. Washington St.).

Remembering 9/11 — The City of Alexandria invites the public to a 10 a.m. Wednesday remembrance ceremony for the 12th anniversary of the events of Sept. 11, 2001. The event will take place in Market Square at 301 King St. The purpose of the commemoration is to give thanks and pay tribute to those who responded on 9/11 without fear, acted without hesitation, and gave their lives to save others. The ceremony will feature remarks from Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille, Alexandria Sheriff Dana Lawhorne, Police Chief Earl Cook and Fire Chief Adam Thiel.

Second Thursday — Head down to the lower King Street area from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, for “Night of a Thousand Strings.” Keep your eyes peeled for fiber art, yarn bombs and a chance to play alongside the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra. More information available on the Second Thursday website.

Sgt. Larvelle “Motormouth” Jones — Michael Winslow, the “Man of 10,000 Sound Effects” and—in all truth—the best thing about the “Police Academy” movies, will be at the Old Town Theater (815 ½ King St.) for a series of shows Thursday through Saturday this week. Tickets start at $25. More information available at the Old Town Theater website.
