Scottish Christmas Walk Weekend, Boat Parade of Lights and the Del Ray Tree Lighting

The Christmas season officially gets underway in Alexandria.

Scottish Christmas Walk Parade — This Alexandria tradition kicks off at 11 a.m. in Old Town. The Scottish government serves as the premier partner of the free parade, which is expected to draw 30,000 people to the streets. Scottish Walk events begin on Friday with the Christmas Marketplace from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the George Washington Masonic Memorial. Other events include the Taste of Scotland, an evening of top-shelf whiskeys and Scottish fare, a Heather and Greens sale, the Holiday Designer Tour of Homes, and Deck the Halls with Santa Children’s Party. Boat Parade of Lights — The 14th annual Alexandria Holiday Boat Parade of Lights motors down the Potomac River at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7. Dozens of brightly lit boats will stretch along Alexandria’s shore for the colorful parade at Alexandria's historic harbor. The parade is led by Alexandria's fireboat Vigilant and Washington, DC's fireboat John Glenn.

Del Ray Tree Lighting and Luminarias — If you missed Alexandria’s city tree lighting, Del Ray will host its annual community tree lighting at 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7 at the corner of Mount Vernon and E. Oxford avenues. The event will include carols, a visit from Santa and hundreds of luminarias along Mount Vernon Avenue in honor of the late Nancy Dunning.

Holiday Market — The Friends of the Alexandria Commission for Women presents an afternoon of fun, art, women artists and wine. More than 30 exhibitors, jewelry, handcrafted accessories, pottery and more will be on hand from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8 at the Charles Houston Rec Center (905 Wythe St.). No cost to attend and refreshments will be served. Raffles will be held throughout the event. Proceeds will benefit the Alexandria Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Programs.

"A Christmas Carol" — The Little Theatre of Alexandria (600 Wolfe St.) debuted its new performance of the holiday classic from Charles Dickens on Thursday. Tickets are $15 and performances run through Dec. 22. Ticket and showtime info available on the Little Theatre of Alexandria website.

"A Broadway Christmas Carol" — This holiday staple recently opened at Alexandria’s MetroStage (1201 N. Royal St.). The show crosses the Dickens classic with parodies of 33 Broadway show tunes. Tickets are $50 and available through the MetroStage website or by calling 703-548-9044. Runs through Dec. 22 with shows over the weekend.
