The Campagna Center gives Alexandria's children resources to ensure they become productive members of the community. It offers a series of after-school and other programs to keep kids engaged at the center and throughout the city's public schools. It was originally founded as the Alexandria branch of the YMCA, but evolved into a separate entity with the help of Elizabeth Anne Campagna, the YMCA's director in the 1960s who in turn led the Campagna Center. The center's building sits on a parcel of land originally dedicated by George Washington to the city of Alexandria for the Alexandria Academy, an educational institution.
