Patch file photo of McDonnell introducing Mitt Romney.

The wealthy and powerful protecting their own. McDonnell made a shameful mess of the VA gov'sRead More office, a hurt that may last for decades. He ought to take his licks and move on, begging forgiveness from the electorate.

I am glad you received complaints in your office, Mr. Moran. Shame on you! AND shame on the idiotRead More Virginians that kept you in office so long that you felt "elite" enough to propose an increase in salary for the wealthiest segment of the population -- our representatives in the House and our Senators! I am hopeful -- in the smallest of ways -- that this proposal will irk voters to REALLY contemplate the character of the people they put in office! Stuck-up elitists need not bother to run. Let's get some REAL PEOPLE in office who KNOW the cost of a gallon of milk and a dozen eggs!

Who says they have to maintain two full households in the first place? In the past (in fact, upRead More until about halfway through the last century), most senators and representatives rented apartments or rooms in boarding houses in Washington and maintained their households in their home districts. Of course, another solution would be for them to telecommute. The technology has been available for years to allow them to do whatever they needed from their home offices and only have to actually come to Washington for a few weeks a year. Just think, if lobbyists had to spend all their time and money going from district to district to influence Congress, they might actually fade away. At least the amount of influence they have would be less "invisible" since it would be taking place under the constituents' noses instead of "far away in Washington."

No Angel, society is ripping itself apart by encouraging a immoral, teen pregnancy, single mothersRead More who cannot provide for their babies, do whatever feels good and the government will support you so long as you vote democratic, hopeless way of life. Any good contractor knows that you have to tear down the old before you can build the new. Problem is that the new that the left wants to build HAS NEVER, AND NEVER WILL SUCCEED. It has been tried before, and the sin always corrupts from the inside out. I know that the traditional, patriot like myself will never succeed against the lust of evil that has taken over the lifestyles of America. The Holy Bible tells us that we will be persecuted for his name sake, that their will be a great falling away from the Church right before the end of the Church Age. In a strange way, I am excited about the deviancy you promote, because the mere fact that it is being accepted is proof positive that the Rapture is imminent. You keep referring to the end of outlawing mixed race marriages like it somehow pertains to the deviant unions you seem to want. Mixed marriages between black and white people were not outlawed in the Bible, only between different races that practiced pagan religions, because they would draw the children of Israel away from the one true God. The lure of deviancy is strong, homosexual prostitutes would practice their trade on the temple steps of the pagans. They would burn their babies alive in a sacrifice to Baal. Seeing mass groups of people doing these deviant acts somehow convinces the masses that it is acceptable. The homosexual community is using the same tactics that the worshipers of Baal used. Just as you think you are winning, God will pull the rug out from under you. Come to Jesus while you still can. He can heal your sickness.

Natassia, not all LGBT want to eliminate or "fundamentally destroy" the institution ofRead More marriage. You really can't lump all homosexuals together, just as you can't lump all heterosexuals together. I know lesbian and gay couples who are married and treasure the institution of marriage. I also know heterosexual couples who are not married and don't believe in marriage. Recognizing the rights of LGBT people to marry, with all the rights and responsibilities thereof, does not equate with destroying marriage any more than interracial marriages have destroyed it. From a religious perspective, each person and each church/denomination can and should decide whether to recognize and/or perform such marriages. I personally believe God does not condemn LGBT unions. From a legal perspective, I have yet to hear a good argument against same-sex marriages.

But Helen, they are indeed jumping all over each other to take the job, especially on the rareRead More occasions when seats open up. And I suspect the job of U.S. Rep is still highly desirable, as Jim's own open seat indicates, precisely because it catapults the winner into what Jim calls the "board of directors for the largest economic entity in the world." I like Jim Moran a lot, and voted for him, but on this issue I think he's wrong. Congress is not like a business "board of directors." $174,000 (excluding the extraordinary material benefits, not to mention the retirement income and bevy of companies who'll pay them high price for their political insider knowledge and connections when they retire) places U.S. Reps in the richest 5% of American incomes. Income (and wealth) inequality is already a serious problem in America. Let's not make it worse by making our US Reps even more distanced in income from the people they represent.

Let me guess. Do you trust the Alexandria City Council to do the right thing or not?
pistrix March 17, 2014 at 11:40 am
1. The ODBC owns the property, that the city is trying to take. 2.The use of eminent domain wasRead More never taken off the table by the City. 3.The City is trying to strong arm the Old Dominion Boat Club into taking a deal that is less than what it has now. If the Citizen of Alexandria let the City Council take the ODBC property, what is to stop Council from taking your property? If the ODBC stands up to the City and say use eminent domain to take the property of the ODBC, what will it cost the citizens of Alexandria? What happens if the Courts find in the ODBC's favor or that the property is found to be worth more than what the City offered, and because of the taking under eminent domain, once the property is taken, the City and its citizen own the property and will have to pay what ever the Courts say it is worth. Its happened before and it could happen again. If you think that Alexandria City Mayor is wrong in taking ODBC property give them a call and tell then. Alexandria Mayor William D. Euille To discuss this by phone, call 703.746.4500

Saveengine204 March 10, 2014 at 02:19 pm
The City has proposed closing the Engine Co at the station on Powahtan and Second St, in their FY15Read More budget. This will lead to increased response times for the 1000s of residents served by Engine 204. The Fire Departmet is an industry where minutes and seconds matter and these increased response times could mean the difference between a good or bad outcome. Closing Engine Co. 204 also means that surrounding Engines will now have to leave their first due areas to respond to Engine 204s calls, this means their first due areas will now be left vulnerable. Engine 204 has served the residents of Northern Old Town, Old Town, Del Ray and Rosemont since 1961 and we hope to continue. Help save Engine 204 by checking us out on Facebook at Facebook.com/saveengine204 and on twitter @saveengine204.

The situation is even more dire than this! There is a huge increase of new construction (readRead More "shoddy") in this part of Alexandria , and the area is already extremely dense. There were two townhouse fires on new and recent construction not far from engine 204 in one month earlier in 2014 . The proposed relocation is a recipe for disaster. Moreover, the City spent several millions of dollars a few years ago to upgrade Engine 204 and to enhance the HQ and EOC. Alexandria has a history of creating HQs and then moving them after spending a great deal of money on them (e.g., Queen Street Library to Beatley, Relocation of Police HQ, and now FD HQ).
