When federal budget cuts from sequestration start March 1, Alexandria and the surrounding communities of Virginia's 8th congressional district will be hit hard due to the sheer number of residents employed by the federal government.
The across-the-board federal spending cuts slated to take effect Friday could impact Virginia’s 8th Congressional District—which includes Alexandria—more heavily than any other district in the state. In addition to the tens of thousands of 8th District residents facing furloughs from their government jobs, a number of residents work for major government contractors headquartered here. In government-saturated Virginia, a sequestration study by George Mason University found up to 207,000 jobs could be lost. Northern Virginia defense contractors speaking with Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Virginia, at a roundtable event earlier this month said sequestration started affecting their jobs in the defense industry months ago. In addition, the sequester could…

Congressman says his office will cooperate with investigation.
Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Moran responded Thursday night to his son's sudden departure from his campaign, saying Patrick Moran is learning a "tough lesson" after being caught on video by a conservative activist. Patrick Moran has been at the center of a political storm since a video surfaced Wednesday from conservative activist James O'Keefe in which an unseen cameraman repeatedly asks for advice on how to vote for 100 inactive voters, whose names and addresses he had claimed to have obtained. After telling the man his energy would be better utilized in more traditional, legitimate get-out-the-vote efforts, the younger Moran informs the cameraman that he would need to forge documents to get past new voter identification laws. Though O'Keefe…

Northern Virginia Urban League Young Professionals Network hosted event Wednesday night in Arlington.
The Northern Virginia Urban League Young Professionals Network held a candidate forum for the 8th Congressional District on Wednesday to encourage its members to "occupy the vote." The forum featured incumbent Democratic Rep. Jim Moran, who left after giving opening remarks and answering the first two questions, with Arlington's Terron Sims II speaking on his behalf for the rest of the night; independent candidate Jason Howell; and Independent Green Janet Murphy. Republican Patrick Murray was invited but declined to attend and did not send a surrogate, organizers said. CNN commentator Jamal Simmons, who moderated the forum, asked the candidates whether affirmative action was appropriate in higher education admissions. Moran said the first …

Independent candidate performed song recently during IOTA open mic night.
Jason Howell, an Arlington resident running as an independent candidate in 8th Congressional District, this month took to the stage to deliver his message in a unique way. Howell, who is challenging incumbent Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Moran and Republican Patrick Murray, performed last week during open mic night at IOTA. Howell performed "Congress-Man," a composition inspired by — and to the tune of — Elton John's "Rocket Man." Howell said in an email to Patch that this was one of the ways he was trying to reach people who have otherwise been disengaged from politics. "My roots in the community begin with live, local music in the early 1990s. Music is independent of party and musicians can be the philosophers of our time. The message I am …

Northern Virginia voters will choose among Democrats, Republicans and Independent candidates in congressional races come November.
UPDATE (3:45 p.m.) The State Board of Elections confirmed today that Chris DeCarlo and Mark Gibson, running in the 11th District, were verified with 1,000 signatures each earlier today. “I can’t thank everyone enough: Friends, friends of friends, neighbors, colleagues, and complete strangers,” Gibson said in a news release. “These are all voters who want to get involved in our political process, giving voters a greater number and more diverse selection of candidates for Congress. Getting on the ballot is a strong victory for democracy.” --- Independent candidates running for Congress had until June 12 to turn in 1,000 signatures to get on the ballot in November. Some candidates are still waiting to hear if they are on the ballot and …

Northern Virginia congressman says his seniority benefits constituents.
Since 1990, when Rep. Jim Moran was first elected to Congress, ‘80s music has lost its popularity, come back in style and is on its way out again. A lot can happen in 22 years, the time Moran has spent serving in Congress. It’s the seniority gained over that time, said Moran, a Democrat representing Virginia’s 8th District, that allows him to influence legislation beneficial to the people of Northern Virginia and is the reason why he deserves a 12th term in the U.S. House of Representatives. While Moran’s critics say a fresh face is needed in Congress, he maintains that his seniority works for the benefit of his constituency. “For lack of a better method, people’s ability to influence the priorities and the direction of the Congress is …

Arlington resident Bruce Shuttleworth is a former Navy fighter pilot.
Bruce Shuttleworth knows it takes hard work and tenacity for a political newcomer to edge out a 22-year incumbent congressman. Despite long odds and a funding gap that favors Democratic primary opponent Rep. Jim Moran, Shuttleworth thinks he’s got what it takes to win. “In 12 years of living here, I did not meet many people who enjoyed voting for my competitor, and without any prompting, quite a few people said they wanted a fresh perspective,” Shuttleworth told Patch. “And so I’m going to test that, and we’ll see how that works out. "Clearly, he has the experiential advantage over me, but I think I bring the power of a fresh perspective, and energy and commitment, to these issues that clearly are life and death to me,” he said. …

Arlington resident Jason Howell has less than $10,000 in the campaign bank and needs 1,000 signatures by June 12 to get on the ballot.
Arlington resident Jason Howell isn't letting incumbent Congressman Jim Moran's sizable war chest of nearly half-a-million dollars get in the way of running for Congress. Howell's got less than $10,000 in the bank for his campaign, so he's hitting every local barbecue, 5k and neighborhood meeting he can to help get the word out. Standing outside the Giant grocery store in Arlington's Cherrydale neighborhood over the weekend, Howell said hello to potential voters in what will likely be an uphill battle to try to unseat Moran, a Democrat who some say is gliding toward his 12th term since getting elected in 1990 to represent Virginia's 8th Congressional District. "My wife and I are doing the lion's share of signature-gathering," Howell said…
Republican primary election set for U.S. Senate candidates; Democratic primary election scheduled for 8th Congressional District and Alexandria City Council candidates.

Voter registration applications must be postmarked by that day or dropped off in the Office of Voter Registration and Elections by 5 p.m. If you are 17 years old now but are turning 18 by the Nov. 6 general election, you can vote in the June 12 primary. Bruce Shuttleworth had claimed he was unlawfully left off the Democratic primary ballot.
The Virginia State Board of Elections announced Monday evening it would allow a Democratic primary challenger to U.S. Rep. Jim Moran on the ballot after initially disqualifying him. Bruce Shuttleworth, an Arlington resident, filed a lawsuit last week in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. In the lawsuit, he claims Democratic Party officials failed to certify valid signatures his campaign collected from voters residing in the 8th Congressional District, leaving Moran the only candidate to be certified for the ballot. The Washington Post reported Monday evening that Justin Riemer, deputy secretary of the State Board of Elections, said the state Democratic party had certified Shuttleworth’s name. Riemer did not say …
