Veteran Artist Program Seeks Artistic Troops

The program is looking for submissions for an exhibit at the Pentagon.

The Veteran Artist Program is hoping to paint a broader portrait of the stereotypical stoic soldier with an exhibit at the Pentagon next year. “Most people don’t put military and the arts together,” said B.R. McDonald, who formed Veteran Artists. “Some of that is true in terms of the culture, but at the same time, since 9/11 you have a broad base of veterans out there.” McDonald recently contacted the art curator at the Pentagon about displaying artwork by veterans in the Pentagon’s lobby and other high traffic areas. “This is the first time we’ve ever done an all-veterans exhibit,” said McDonald, who lives in Alexandria. “I didn’t even know they had a curator.” Pentagon officials said yes, and the Veteran Artists group plans on displaying…

Alexandrian Experienced 9/11 in NYC

Teacher Laurie Regelebrugge started the day in NYC but got home by midnight.

Alexandria resident Laurie Regelbrugge, a teacher at Blessed Sacrament School, was in New York City on Sept. 11th. Here are a few of her recollections: After watching TV coverage all morning, we had to do something. We decided to walk from mid-town toward Ground Zero to see if we could help. Evidence of the tragedy pervaded city streets as victims walked with a deliberate pace, distant yet unseeing gazes, and fine gray ash covering their hair, faces, and clothing. Those who weren’t victims offered shy, sad smiles. Phrases like “unbelievable,” “how tragic,” and “are you OK?” were shared among perfect strangers. Never have I witnessed such an atmosphere of humanity and unity. Shelters were set up in the train stations, and there was still …

An Alexandrian Remembers 9/11

David Haglund was at Misha's when he realized something was very wrong.

Del Ray resident David Haglund had off that Tuesday. “It was the first really nice fall morning, and I remember the sky was vibrant blue and the temperatures were cool,” he said. Master Sergeant Haglund, a trumpet and cornet player with "The President’s Own" United States Marine Band, headed to Misha’s for coffee. In the car he heard WTOP radio report a plane had hit one of the towers of the World Trade Center.  “I didn’t think too much of it,” said Haglund. “It sounded like it was a small plane.” Less than an hour later, Haglund knew something bigger was happening.  “I was at Misha’s when suddenly all this emergency vehicle traffic was speeding by on Route 1,” he said. “I remember it was fire truck, after fire truck, after fire truck. A …

Another 9/11 Stranger-Helping-Stranger Story: Because I was working at the FAA Headquarters building, I heard about the terrorist attacks much sooner than many others did. Shortly after hearing of the Pentagon disaster, I left FAA Headquarters and walked down Independence Avenue to flag down a taxi to get me home, but to no avail. Finally, after turning my ankle and giving up on a taxi, I headed …   more ›

What Does 9/11 Mean to You?

One mom's hope for the legacy of the terrorist attacks 10 years ago.

To many in this area, 9/11 is a vivid return to painful and tragic memories. It is a day that conjures up thoughts of sirens and billowing smoke, fear, uncertainty and loss. For me, 9/11 was defining. I was in Army basic training, just days from graduation. Suddenly, everything that we did became very real.   Upon graduation, we stepped into an intense world that was completely different than the one we had left. The day of the terrorist attacks defined our training, our focus and our way of life.   A year and a half later, I was deployed to a war zone that would shape my political and world views, begin my career and introduce me to the amazing man that—years later—I would ultimately marry. Now a parent, I look back and consider what …
