Eighteen local nonprofits are giving 5 percent of their proceeds to the Boston Foundation in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombings.
Alexandria’s annual day of giving Spring2ACTion raised nearly $660,00 for 97 charities on Wednesday. The 24-hour event was hosted by ACT for Alexandria and ACTion Alexandria. ACT along with 17 other nonprofits will donate 5 percent of their proceeds raised through the event to the Boston Foundation’s Marathon Day 2013 Fund to provide support for mental health, community convening andn first responder support services. “After raising $104,000 in 2011 and $319,000 in 2012, we thought this year’s goal to raise $500,000 was extremely ambitious,” said Brandi Yee, chief program officer of ACT for Alexandria. “But once again, the tenacity of our nonprofits and the generosity of the community overwhelmed us.” The 97 participating nonprofits were…

Wednesday, April 17, is this year's Spring2Action event.
Across the city Wednesday, local nonprofits are participating in online giving event Spring2ACTion. Every donation made during the 24-hour event gives an organization the chance to win up to $30,000 in grants and prizes. The minimum donation is $10 during the event, which is hosted by ACT for Alexandria and ACTion Alexandria. In 2012, Spring2ACTion raised $320,000 in one day benefiting 72 nonprofit organizations. Each nonprofit receives 95 percent of all designated donations. The Razoo Foundation retains 2.9 percent of each donation for credit card processing and disbursement costs, and 2.1 percent is retained by ACT for Alexandria for administrative expenses. ACTion Alexandria and the Bruhn-Morris Foundation are giving grant prizes to nonprofits who attract fans through the project.
ACTion Alexandria and the Bruhn-Morris Foundation are giving grant prizes to the nonprofit that gets the most number of fans in their Make Us Your Favorite Contest. Community members can vote with their mouse on the ACTion Alexandria website between Monday at 9 a.m. through Jan. 18 at 5 p.m. Nonprofits can win $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place and $250 for the third spot. Along with ACTion Alexandria and the Alexandria Chapter of the NAACP, Patch is presenting a forum for mayoral and city council candidates in Alexandria at 7 p.m. Monday at the George Washington Middle School auditorium. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., with the forum expected to run from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The event will feature a one-on-one debate between Democratic Mayor Bill Euille and independent challenger Andrew Macdonald. Events are designed to attract families to playgrounds they might be unfamiliar with or that have recently undergone renovations.
Project Play, an initiative of the Alexandria Childhood Obesity Action Network and ACTion Alexandria, has put together a "Community at Play" series with two play events scheduled in Arlandria and Upper King Street. The Community at Play series is designed to attract families with young children to neighborhood playgrounds and playspaces that they may not have known about earlier or that have been improved recently. The first event, on Tuesday, will kick off in Arlandria behind the Community Lodgings Family Resource Center at 607 Notabene Dr. Children will participate in fun activity stations and play at the new Chirilagua Cooperative playground. Nearly 3,700 people donated $319,333 for 75 participating Alexandria nonprofits on Wednesday during Spring2Action, a 24-hour online fundraising drive presented by Virginia Commerce Bank and put on by ACT for Alexandria and ACTion Alexandria. The event surpassed its fundraising goal of $200,000 and its donor goal of 2,000. Three Alexandria restaurants hosted “give-togethers” at different times on Wednesday. The events, held at The Uptowner, Bittersweet and Pork Barrel BBQ, gave people representing different nonprofits a chance to compete for donors.

ACTion Alexandria wants to know what you would ask the city’s many candidates for city council. The web-based service designed to help bring together members of the community with local nonprofit groups to solve problems in the city reached out to citizens in a blog post on Monday. The nonprofit works to help other area nonprofits with fundraising, organizing events and other activities.
ACTion Alexandria turns one year old on Tuesday and has much to celebrate. The nonprofit is a barn raising effort for the digital age – it helps other Alexandria nonprofits raise funds and initiate projects to grow community giving via online tools. During the last year, ACTion raised more than $120,000 and donated more than 3,700 items to area nonprofits, among many other success stories. The group also garnered about 2,000 registered members, or about 1.3% of Alexandria’s population. Healthy city indicator system included in fiscal year 2012 budget
Alexandria is one of the wealthiest cities in the country, but things could always get better. The Alexandria City Council will most likely approve a $45,000 “Healthy City” indicator system in the fiscal year 2012 budget, which will assess the city’s social, economic and environmental conditions. Residents and business owners have until Apr. 1 to vote on what matters most to the people who live in Alexandria.
