May includes National Correctional Officers and Employees Week, National Police Week.
Alexandrians are invited to honor men and women in uniform who serve the city as police or correctional officers at three events in May. National Correctional Officers and Employees Week runs from May 5 through 11, said Alexandria Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Amy Bertsch. Recruits were sworn in last week.
Six new deputies have joined the Alexandria Sheriff's Office. The recruits received their stars and credentials Friday. They were sworn in at the Alexandria Courthouse by Clerk of the Circuit Court Edward Semonian. The new deputies are Dorian Shelley, Jeffrey Halaut Jr., Marko Nikolic, Andrew Brunsting, John Kayajanian Jr. and Timothy Wauhop. The new deputies will complete several weeks of training at the William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center before attending the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Training Academy later this year. Alexandria’s Crisis Intervention Team added 15 new members in February when four police officers, four sheriff deputies, two code administrators, three fire department personnel and two probation and parole officers graduated from the 12th CIT training. The classes are part of the ongoing effort to instruct city first responders and Detention Center personnel in techniques to improve staff interactions and outcomes with persons with mental illness and substance use disorders. A deputy sheriff was confronted by a burglary suspect when he arrived at his Maryland, according to Prince George's County police.
Authorities say an Alexandria sheriff's deputy who lives in Fort Washington, Md., fatally shot a burglary suspect Tuesday night inside his home. The deceased suspect is identified as 20-year-old Jon Adgrain Pocknett of the 4000 block of Doncaster Drive in Indian Head. According to Prince George's County police, the deputy noticed his front door was damaged around 10:50 p.m. when he returned to his residence in 8400 block of Rose Marie Drive. When he went inside, he was reportedly confronted by the suspect. The homeowner shot the apparent burglar, who collapsed outside the residence, according to police. Toys for Tots and Operation Warm partnered with local officers to make this holiday season brighter for children of more than 50 inmates.
The children of more than 50 Alexandria inmates received a holiday gift Tuesday thanks to Toys for Tots and Operation Warm. Some children also received winter coats. Family members and guardians picked up the new toys and coats at the Alexandria Sheriff's Office headquarters on Mill Road. Each year, Toys for Tots provides the sheriff's office with donated toys so children of inmates in the William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center who otherwise would not receive gifts can receive a toy during holiday celebrations. This year, Toys for Tots of Quantico, under the direction of Marine Staff Sgt. Six Alexandria police department employees have graduated from the Crisis Intervention Team’s 10th training academy. A graduation ceremony was held 2:30 p.m. Friday at the police department headquarters. The Alexandria Police Department and Alexandria Sheriff’s Office developed the Crisis Intervention Team through a partnership with the Department of Mental Health. The team comprises highly skilled and specially trained police officers who function as part of the regular police patrol. Employees of the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office are helping make a brighter Thanksgiving for those in need. On Monday, deputy Valarie Wright delivered several boxes of nonperishable canned and dry goods to ALIVE!’s food program as part of an annual Alexandria Sheriff’s Office tradition. ALIVE! (ALexandrians InVolved Ecumenically) is a nonprofit of volunteers from more than 40 religious institutions and the community working to help those in need in Alexandria. Wright led a month-long drive among staff members, who donated food such as canned tuna and meat, peanut butter, pancake mix and breakfast cereals, as well as cash, which was used to purchase more food. The Alexandria Sheriff’s Office has been reaccredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), Sheriff Dana Lawhorne announced Monday. The Office received the official reaccreditation at a ceremony Saturday, during CALEA’s fall conference in Jacksonville, Fla. As part of the reaccreditation process, CALEA assessors visited the sheriff’s office in August for a three-day, on-site assessment to examine the office’s policies and procedures, management, operations and support services related to law enforcement.
