Banana Tree to Hold Pop-up Sale in Del Ray

Asian housewares business will temporarily move into commercial space at Lofts of Del Ray.

Banana Tree, an importing business specializing in antique, vintage and Art Deco Asian home furnishings and other items from Thailand, India, Indonesia and Burma, will hold a pop-up sale at the Lofts of Del Ray from May 5 to May 29. In April of 2011, owners Monique and Bob Bergin closed their King Street store after more than 18 years in business to make a move to e-commerce. Though happy with the move to the web, Monique Bergin says she didn’t want to lose touch with her longtime customers. “[Pop-up sales were] always part of the plan when we closed on King Street,” Bergin said. Banana Tree Owners Say Time Is Ripe to Close Shop, Move to the Web

Asian import store says customer buying habits have changed with today's rapid technologies

Home furnishings store Banana Tree is planning to close its shop on King Street and move its retail operations to the web.  The store, which has been in business since 1986, is having a major sale until Apr. 3 to clear out inventory. The store located at 1223 King St. stocks antique, vintage and Art Deco Asian home furnishings from Thailand, India, Indonesia and Burma. The Bergins import goods from Asia and go on several buying trips there a year. “When we started doing this, it was at a time when the fax machine didn’t exist. The internet didn’t exist. None of today’s rapid communications existed,” said co-owner Monique Bergin. “Over 25 years, that working model has become less feasible for us. Part of it is the customer has changed. …
