The owners of 3 Sisters in Old Town opens a new store.
Since 1985, Andrea Ploutis and her family have been a part of the retail business community in Alexandria. Like most boutique stores in Old Town, their new store The Lucky Knot is family-owned and operated. "All of my family is employed working in the boutiques," Ploutis said. "My granddaughter is 8 years old and she was working here all day. She loves it and was sorting clothes and wants to start working." The Lucky Knot is the third boutique store owned by Ploutis and her three daughters. The family currently owns 3 Sisters and Andrea's Boutique both located on King Street. Ploutis said she will continue to run her other stores as planned and has been working around the clock since The Lucky Knot opened July 4. Her daughter Athina …

R-rated film opening this weekend is spectacular, spotty, yet satisfying.
In Greek mythology, Prometheus got in big trouble for handing over the secret of fire to mere mortals. In modern day, he represents the quest for human knowledge and achievement. Of course, he wound up tied to a rock and having an eagle peck his guts out every day. Apparently the team who embarks on their own quest for knowledge in the spacecraft that supplies the title of Ridley Scott's highly anticipated new film hadn't gotten the foreshadowing memo. For them, asking questions about human origin, and actively seeking answers, is the beginning of Bad Things happening, but then we audience members, who are privy to Ridley's dark horrific alien past, know that going in. Much has been made of keeping the plot under wraps. "Prometheus" is …

Visit Old Town's newest storefronts and shop local!
Have you noticed all of the changes on King Street lately? It seems like there is an exciting new storefront opening up nearly every weekend. For me, one of the best things about Old Town living is the hustle and bustle of King Street and the ability to shop local for just about everything. While it’s always sad to see a favorite store close (Am I the only one who misses Moto Foto? I loved the Easter portraits with real bunnies!), it’s thrilling to see new businesses come to our little corner of the world. Whether it’s a chain like Anthropologie, or one of the new small businesses that have recently opened, there are a lot of new faces in town. Now that the weather is nice, why not take a stroll from the King Street metro to the water and …

Mini manicures, pedicures, facials and birthday parties for little girls.
Parents who are looking for the ultimate in over the top birthday fun for their daughters who love pink will no longer have to drive to the suburbs. Dollin’ It Up, a spa for girls ages 3 to 14, has been open in Lorton since 2010, and has opened a second location in Old Town. Situated across the street from the Red Barn Mercantile near the bustling intersection of Columbus and King streets, it’s hard to miss the bright pink and green lettering on the storefront. Dollin’ It Up offers little girl versions of spa manicures, pedicures, facials and hair services as well as birthday party packages. If you have a little girl who is constantly rifling though you makeup bag or asking you to paint her nails, this is a sweet little special occasion …

Communications and marketing firm leaving D.C. for Alexandria.
Reingold, a communications and marketing firm with about 75 employees, is moving to Del Ray. The firm is currently renovating the office building located at the corner of Leslie and E. Monroe avenues behind the Giant grocery store. Reingold Creative Director Joseph Ney told Del Ray Patch the firm plans to move into the building the last week of March, “give or take a week.” The building previously housed the Print Services and Distribution Association. Ney said Reingold, which was founded in 1985, has run out of space at its current office in The Palisades neighborhood of Washington, D.C., near the Georgetown Reservoir. The firm has won several “big and important” accounts over the last two years and has grown in size. Ney said the firm …

Saw it last night for myself, and I think the film could have been loads better. The dialogue stunk, none of the characters were likable and the conclusions made by the principals about the main villains are drawn too quickly. There is no sense of reality, and you don't even care about the ship, which is named Prometheus. It has no real personality of its own and neither does its crew. The whole …   more ›
