Alexandria and Arlington residents celebrated the festival of lights at the annual 'Hanukkah On Ice' event at the Pentagon Row's outdoor ice skating rink Sunday evening. The event featured music, snacks, ice skating and lighting of the Menorah. It was sponsored by Chabad Lubavitch of Alexandria-Arlington. Vice Mayor Kerry Donley will light the 6-foot-tall Menorah at 6:30 p.m. Monday.
Alexandria Vice Mayor Kerry Donley will do the honors of lighting a 6-foot-tall Menorah Monday as part of a Hanukkah celebration hosted by Chabad Lubavitch of Alexandria-Arlington. The celebration will take place at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 901 N. Fairfax St. in Old Town. Following the lighting, hot potato pancakes or "latkes" and donuts, the traditional foods of Chanukah, will be distributed for free. "We want people to 'taste' the tradition," said Rabbi Mordechai Newman, director of Chabad Lubavitch of Alexandria-Arlington. The program will feature free Hanukkah gifts, treats and music. Chabad Lubavitch of Alexandria-Arlington plans celebration for Dec. 9 at the Pentagon City Row ice rink.
Children and adults from Alexandria and Arlington celebrating Hanukkah are set to converge on the ice rink at Pentagon City Row in Arlington next weekend. From 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Dec. 9, Hanukkah on Ice will begin with Jewish music and classic holiday songs. Arlington County Fire Chief James Schwartz will light a huge menorah at 7 p.m. "It is a holiday that enriches our lives with the light of tradition" said Rabbi Mordechai Newman, director of Chabad Lubavitch of Alexandria-Arlington and coordinator of Hanukkah on Ice.
