To the editor, Earlier this year I was proud to be a candidate for Alexandria City School Board for District B. Regretfully, over this past summer, I was forced to withdraw my candidacy due to a series of serious, adverse health events experienced by my family. Since I withdrew my candidacy, many neighbors, friends and fellow citizens have asked me who of my former colleagues running for election I would support in this election. I consider myself fortunate to have had the unique opportunity of communicating and getting to know, to varying degrees, nearly all of the candidates for school board in District B. We are fortunate to have five dedicated individuals stepping forward to fill a critical role. Yet, on election day, you can only …

District B candidate Chris Yianilos says family heath events "make it impossible" for him to continue his campaign.
Chris Yianilos withdrew from the race for Alexandria School Board in District B on Friday, citing family health issues. “Over the last three months, members of my immediate family have experienced adverse health events that make it impossible for me to continue my campaign to represent the citizens of Alexandria,” Yianilos wrote in a statement. “While full recoveries are expected, those of you who know me well will not be surprised that my family always has been, and remains, my top priority. John Warner announced his candidacy in April at a meeting of the Alexandria Republican City Committee. He earned …

She cleaned houses for a living to make ends meet, and taught me along the way the importance of hard work. As you might expect, I had a great deal of responsibility and freedom thrust upon me at a young age. Fortunately, I was blessed with amazing and caring teachers who educated …

Chris Yianilos worked on education issues as a staffer for former U.S. Sen. John Warner.
Chris Yianilos, a former deputy chief of staff for retired U.S. Sen. John Warner, announced his candidacy for Alexandria School Board in District B on Thursday night at a meeting of the Alexandria Republican City Committee. Yianilos, who currently works for Virginia Tech as its director of federal relations on Capitol Hill, said he would like to take his experience working on issues of kindergarten through 12th grade and higher education in Warner’s office and translate it to Alexandria. “You don’t have to look too far into the newspaper to know there are some real challenges facing the school system,” Yianilos said. “I think I can bring a fresh set of ideas, a fresh look.” Yianilos is married with two children under the age of 4. He and…
