Alexandria City Academy Accepting Applications

Eight-week program is open to residents and business owners operating within city limits.

The Alexandria City Academy is now accepting applications from citizens interested in learning more about how the city operates. The city’s Office of Communications and Public Information offers the eight-week course, formerly called the Citizens Academy. Classes take place Thursdays, March 8 through April 25 from 7  p.m. to 9 p.m. at various locations throughout the city. The academy is open to residents 18 years and older and to business owners operating within city limits. The deadline for applaying is Feb. 15. Thanksgiving Schedule for City of Alexandria Services, Facilities

Trash and recycling remains on a regular schedule and will be picked up on Thursday, Thanksgiving Day. No parking restrictions Thursday or Friday. Parking is free in city garages Friday.

All City of Alexandria government offices will be closed on Thursday and Friday in observance of the Thanksgiving Day holiday. Here’s a schedule of city services and facilities provided: Health Facilities: The Alexandria Health Department, 4480 King St., and the Flora Krause Casey Health Center, 1200 N. Howard St., will close at noon Wednesday. The Teen Wellness Center, 3330 King St., will be open Wednesday. All facilities will be closed Thursday and Friday. ACPS Students Recognize Constitution Week at City Hall

Thirty-nine students from three Alexandria schools witness proclamation signing.

Students from Lyles-Crouch Traditional Academy and Mount Vernon and Samuel Tucker elementary schools visited City Hall on Monday to participate in a proclamation signing by Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille signifying Constitution Week. Constitution Week is recognized from Sept. 17 to Sept. 23. It was created to emphasize the responsibility of citizens to protect and defend the Constitution, recognize the document as the foundation of the way of life in the United States and to encourage the study of the events that led to the creation of the Constitution in September 1787. Voter Turnout on Track With Official's Predictions

Voters head to the polls to vote for their state delegate in Tuesday's special election.

Residents slowly made their way to the polls in Alexandria on Tuesday morning, voting for their new delegate to represent them from the state's 45th District. City Hall precinct in Old Town Alexandria had about 145 votes mid-morning, or about 4 percent of the total voting population. About 70 absentee votes also had been tallied, raising the total voters to 6 percent. Precinct Chief Election Officer Jeff Herre said the turnout was "about what we were expecting." Alexandria votes this year are being cast on paper unless a voter requests to vote electronically. Public Invited to Speak on Proposed Real Estate Tax at Saturday Hearing

City Council will hear public comment on real estate and personal property tax rates on Saturday with a May 7 final vote expected.

City Council will hear public comment at its Saturday morning hearing on the 2012 real estate and personal property tax rates beginning at 9:30 a.m. in council chambers at City Hall. City Council on March 13 voted 5-2 to authorize a maximum possible real residential property tax increase to $1.008 per $100 assessed value, an increase of one cent. The personal property tax rate on vehicles and business tangible property tax rates would remain unchanged. Individuals wishing to speak on the issue can sign up online prior to the public hearing or call the Office of the City Clerk and Clerk of Council at 703-746-4550. Alexandria Gives Romney 67 Percent of Their Votes

Turnout of registered voters was about 5 percent, a slight improvement over the 3 percent trending in the earlier part of Tuesday.

The City of Alexandria unequivocally voted Tuesday for Mitt Romney over Ron Paul. The former Massachusetts governor and Texas congressman were the only two candidates on Virginia's Republican presidential primary ballot. The city overall showed a 5 percent turnout, giving Romney 67.6 percent of the vote to Paul’s 32.4 percent. The city mirrored the state’s turnout of registered voters, which was also about 5 percent. About 64 percent of voters in the 8th Congressional District, which includes Alexandria, voted for Romney with 36 percent casting their ballot for Paul. In Precinct 102, City Hall, Old Towners cast 219 votes for Romney, or about 77 percent, to 64 votes for Paul, or 22.6 percent. Voters at Lyles-Crouch Traditional School voted …
