On the Nov. 6 ballot, Alexandrians will see party affiliations for national seats, but not for City Council and mayor.
The ballot for the Nov. 6 election is as special for what is listed on it as what is not—party affiliations for Alexandria’s City Council and mayoral candidates. While Alexandria’s lengthy ballot will show party affiliations for the national races, local races will not. Additionally, thanks to the state draw selecting party order on the ballot, in Alexandria, Republicans will be listed first, followed by Democrats and then Libertarians. “I think it’s great to be on top,” said Alexandria Republican City Committee Chairman Tom Fulton. “It’s a two-page ballot front and back. It’s going to be hard to get voters to fully understand all of the ballot and to get them to remember to flip it over. They have to remember there are 12 choices and they…

Alexandria City Councilman Rob Krupicka claims 63 percent of the vote.
Rob Krupicka is the Democratic nominee for the 45th District House of Delegates seat. The Alexandria City Councilman defeated Karen Gautney 1,540 to 891 after caucus voting ended Saturday at Cora Kelly Rec Center. “I couldn’t be here without the amazing group of friends I made when I entered public life in this city,” Krupicka said shortly after the results were announced. “It was great seeing all those friends come out despite the governor’s best effort to throw one past us.” Gov. Bob McDonnell announced the date of a Sept. 4 special election less than two weeks ago, causing both parties to scramble to nominate a candidate. Krupicka will face Republican nominee Tim McGhee. The seat opened when Del. David Englin announced his resignation …

City Council candidate Boyd Walker explains charges made against him in mailing distributed by Alexandria Democrats for Responsible Government.
2:30 p.m. Saturday update — John Chapman confirmed the removal of Gail Gordon from his campaign team in a statement released Saturday afternoon. He reiterated that he had no part in the organization of Alexandria Democrats for Responsible Government, nor the production or distribution of the attack ad targeting Boyd Walker. "I am running for City Council as a fourth generation Alexandrian to help preserve and extend the best traditions in our city, including civility and transparency in elections," Chapman wrote. "A recent mailer from a new PAC attacked another candidate in ways that are not consistent with those Alexandria traditions." Gordon was the treasurer of Chapman's campaign. Chapman told Patch on Friday he only became aware of …

No one understands better what is at stake for this commonwealth and our country this year than Tim Kaine.” Kaine was in Alexandria on March 28 to host a roundtable with women veterans and military spouses. In February, he opened the Democrats’ coordinated campaign headquarters just …

Virginia delegate representing the 45th District to step down after this term to focus on his family and personal matters.
Del. David Englin (D-45th) announced his resignation Monday night during a meeting of the Alexandria Democratic Committee at Minnie Howard School. “Today I’m announcing that this will be my last term in elected office, and I will not be seeking re-election,” he told the audience. “In my public role, I’ve worked hard to serve my constituents. In my personal life, I’ve let down my family. Shayna and I have recently separated. Shayna has always been the true source of my strength and my happiness. I will leave political life to focus on rebuilding what is first and foremost important to me: My marriage and my family.” In a statement released after the meeting, Englin wrote that he was "unfaithful" in his marriage. Englin added that attention…

Andrew Macdonald's recent appearance and announcement at a recent GOP meeting confounds Alexandria Democratic Committee.
Former Vice Mayor Andrew Macdonald said Tuesday that he is resigning from the Alexandria Democratic Committee. "I have decided to resign as a member the ADC rather then engage in a divisive debate over the merits of the complaints made against me. I have simply decided that I am politically more of an independent, especially when it comes to local public policy issues here in Alexandria,” he told Patch. “I think that Alexandria needs to elect a City Council that is thoughtful, honest and committed to listening to citizens. If I decide to run for elected office in November I will therefore do so as an Independent, not as a member of any party." ADC Chairman Dak Hardwick questioned Macdonald’s choice to announce at a GOP meeting recently …

The former Alexandria vice mayor and the leader of the movement against waterfront redevelopment tells Alexandria GOP that city needs 'a change in leadership.'
Andrew Macdonald is “seriously considering” challenging Bill Euille in November’s mayoral election, the former Alexandria vice mayor announced Thursday night. Macdonald, who was elected to City Council in 2003 as a Democrat, said if he runs it will be as an independent. He made the announcement at a meeting of the Alexandria Republican City Committee. “We need a change in leadership—a significant change,” Macdonald said to great applause in the Minnie Howard School auditorium. Over the last year, Macdonald has been a leading voice in the opposition of the city’s waterfront redevelopment plan. He cofounded Citizens for an Alternative Alexandria Waterfront Plan, which on Tuesday hosted a party to raise legal fees for the citizens seeking to …

At a campaign kick-off party on Prince St. in Old Town, City Council candidate Sean Holihan picked up the endorsement of Councilman Krupicka and outlined his reasons why he's seeking a council seat.
Citing the rapid pace of change in the city, needed support for its vulnerable populations and problems percolating in Richmond, City Council candidate Sean Holihan kicked off his campaign with a Sunday launch party on Prince Street. “There’s a lot of change happening in the city…There’s development in every sector of the city,” Holihan said, adding that he was prompted to run for a place on the dais to “protect the most vulnerable among us” who have diverse socio-economic backgrounds. Education issues also resonate with him. “About 55 percent of kids at T.C. Williams go to college,” he said to a packed first floor at the afternoon event hosted at the house of Nikki Enfield and Andy Bechhoefer. “People look at those statistics. Half of …

Monday, February 20, 2012
To the editor: As the Chair of the Alexandria Democratic Committee (ADC), I wanted to take a few minutes and address some of the recent media activity regarding Councilwoman Alicia Hughes and its relationship to the ADC. Like many of you, I have been following the online and printed commentary regarding Councilwoman Hughes and her tenure on City Council and past activities outside Alexandria. Let me state emphatically that neither I nor my organization is responsible for any of the "secret" comments or accounts you are seeing. We did not set up and are not responsible for the fake Twitter account, the Facebook page, nor the most recent "Impeach Alicia Hughes" website. We have not coordinated, nor have we attempted to coordinate with any …

Romney plans to change? How can he undo two years of stupid remarks? How can he undo how he insulted London, China and Russia? How can Ryan undo his Town Hall meetings all last Spring when he told seniors he would get rid of social security and medicare because they were ponzi schemes? You can not fix stupid and you can not turn a machine into a human being. But...........you can release your tax…   more ›
