Donna Fossum, a member of the Alexandria Planning Commission for more than two decades, was voted off the prestigious board on Tuesday night. Three new Planning Commission members were appointed by City Council—Maria Wasowski, Nate Macek and Derek Hyra. Longtime commissioners Larry Robinson and Jessie Jennings stepped off the influential body, which makes recommendations to council on special use permits, requests for vacations or encroachments of public right-of-ways, rezonings, master plan amendments and other requests. City officials and others opened the new James Bland Park at Old Town Commons on Wednesday morning, saying the new green space will foster unity. “This is about bringing people together,” said Derek Hyra, chairman of the Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority board of commissioners. Hyra, a Virginia Tech professor who also studies race relations in urban developments, added that the new Old Town Commons development will have mixed races and mixed income levels ranging from less than $20,000 annually to more than $150,000 living side by side. “This is something that hasn’t been done that often” in our country, he said, adding that the park is a necessity that will stimulate interaction among the neighbors. Alexandria resident Derek Hyra, who serves as a professor at Virginia Tech's Old Town Alexandria campus, has been elected chairman of the board of commissioners for the Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority. “It is an honor and privilege to serve the City of Alexandria in this leadership role,” Hyra said in a statement posted by Virginia Tech. “This is an important public service opportunity that not only coincides remarkably well with my scholarly interests but it closely aligns with my personal values.” Hyra joined Virginia Tech in 2009.
