Where's the Cheapest Gas in Alexandria?

Use this gas price locator tool to find the lowest price right now.

by Virginia Patch Staff Gas prices nationwide were predicted to be lower this summer compared to the last three years, but that won't translate into savings at the pump this Memorial Day weekend, experts said. "Motorists this year are facing rising gas prices heading into the Memorial Day holiday," said Michael Green, a AAA spokesman, adding that Memorial Day 2013 would probably be the most expensive since 2011. In past years, prices have declined heading into early summer as oil refineries produced more gasoline to meet expected summer driving demand. This year, though, Midwest refineries haven't been able to produce as much gas, which has pushed prices up. "If you can gas up today to prepare for your Memorial Day driving, do so," said …

Where's the Cheapest Gas in Alexandria?

Gas prices are rising. Here's where you can save money on gas in Alexandria.

Gas prices are on the rise again in Alexandria.  AAA Mid-Atlantic reported this week that gas prices in Virginia have risen 35 cents since mid-January. The average gas price in Virginia is $3.59; in the DC metro area, it's $3.75. A recent Texas Transportation Institute study said the DC area has the worst traffic. It also noted that America as a whole spends $121 billion in gas and time in traffic each year. That's roughly $818 per person, per year. Here's what The Atlantic reported Wednesday: Despite the fact that we're in February, when the price at the pump is traditionally low, gasoline has gotten near the $3.80-a-gallon mark on average nationwide, and it is close to $4 per gallon on the West Coast. AAA tells the Washington Post that …

Use the Patch App to Find Cheap Gas

The year-end holiday travel season officially starts Saturday.

Nearly 2.7 million Virginia residents will go over the river and through the woods for Christmas and the New Year holiday, according to AAA. While this is only a slight increase from last year, it will still be a busier-than-average holiday season. "The fact that the number of Virginians expected to travel this year-end exceeds the decade high average by four percent illustrates the importance of being with loved ones for the holidays, regardless of a struggling economy,” said Martha Mitchell Meade, manager of public and government affairs for AAA Mid-Atlantic. The 2012 year-end holiday travel season officially starts Saturday and continues through Tuesday, Jan. 1. Nationally, more than 88 million people will travel, mostly by car. Gas …

Tropical Storm Isaac Bumps Up Local Gas Prices Again

Gas prices increase over night after Isaac reaches the Gulf.

Since then-Hurricane Isaac hit land Tuesday afternoon, there has been an average 4 cent increase in gas prices across the nation, a bump felt at the pump in Northern Virginia as well, according to AAA. “I think the change in gas prices is short-lived,” said John Townsend, spokesman for AAA Mid-Atlantic. “Once the weather changes, hopefully we’ll see prices similar to what they were before the storm.” In Alexandria, the average gas price this week is $3.92, an increase from last week's average of $3.84 and last month's $3.65 per gallon. In the Washington, D.C., area, the average gas price for regular gasoline jumped from $3.93 to $3.99 since Tuesday night, according to AAA. Delivery Drivers Feel Pain at the Pump

Some companies may pass increased costs onto consumers

Drivers and the small businesses that employ them are feeling a lot of pain at the gas pump and Old Town Alexandria is no exception. According to AAA, the current national average for a gallon of regular gasoline is $3.98. While the average for the entire state of Virginia is lower than that, gas stations in Northern Virginia are priced higher. The most recent spike in oil prices can be attributed to unrest in Middle Eastern countries, but as summer approaches, experts say expect prices to continue climbing. According to the U.S. Energy and Information Administration, fuel prices are up about 25 percent from 2010 and that could climb to 40 percent over last summer. The Society of American Florists based in Old Town says local florists are …
