Ice House Conversion Receives Approval

Boyd Walker aims to turn historic Mutual Ice Company building into gelato and coffee shop.

The Alexandria Planning Commission approved an application on Tuesday to turn the small Commerce Street ice house into a gelato shop. Boyd Walker, a Democratic candidate for City Council, owns the building and plans to restore the 280-square-foot, 1932 ice house for year-round operation, also serving coffee and baked goods. The business, which is located at 200 Commerce Street, will accommodate seven indoor seats and 30 seats outside. Walker and city staff settled on hours of operation from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Walker removed a request for live music. "It is a good adapted reuse," Walker said. Additionally, Walker proposes hours of operation from 10 a.m. to midnight with “no extraordinary noise” expected. He requests that unamplified music be available at the shop on weekends and for special …

I understand most people (myself included) would think Mr. Walker should be able to do what he wants with his money. I just wish he would extend that courtesy to others, like the owner of the Carver Nursery school who has had his money tied up in it for years because other …   more ›

Boccato Gelato Opening in Old Town Alexandria

Store owner plans a lounge opening April 1st

Boccato Gelato is coming to Old Town. Owner Christian Velasco, who also operates a store in the Clarendon neighborhood of Arlington, plans to set up shop on King Street between Patrick and Henry streets. “In all my years in the food business, I’ve always appreciated Old Town,” Velasco told Old Town Alexandria Patch. “It’s a community and a neighborhood with a beautiful walk and stroll near antique shops and other businesses...It’s a sophisticated community.” He noted that his new shop will be located away from other ice cream shops, which are located closer to Old Town’s waterfront. “I’ve been looking for a location in Old Town for three years,” he said. “I finally found a location that’s wonderful. It’s the whole first floor and parking …
