Boyd Walker aims to turn historic Mutual Ice Company building into gelato and coffee shop.
The Alexandria Planning Commission approved an application on Tuesday to turn the small Commerce Street ice house into a gelato shop. Boyd Walker, a Democratic candidate for City Council, owns the building and plans to restore the 280-square-foot, 1932 ice house for year-round operation, also serving coffee and baked goods. The business, which is located at 200 Commerce Street, will accommodate seven indoor seats and 30 seats outside. Walker and city staff settled on hours of operation from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Walker removed a request for live music. "It is a good adapted reuse," Walker said. Planning Commission set to hear application for gelato shop next month.
The Planning Commission in February is set to review a proposal to turn the tiny Commerce St. ice house into a gelato shop. Applicant Boyd Walker plans to restore the 280-square-foot, 1931 ice house for year-round operation, also serving coffee and baked goods, according to forms filed with the city. The business, which is located at 200 Commerce St., expects to accommodate 12 seats inside and 30 seats outside. Walker says in his application that the business would expect 50 patrons per day on average and would require four employees. Store owner plans a lounge opening April 1st
Boccato Gelato is coming to Old Town. Why would Mr. Walker be spending money on this instead of donating the money to his passion of saving Carver Nursery School? I understand most people (myself included) would think Mr. Walker should be able to do what he wants with his money.
