Students at Alexandria City Public Schools will have weather-related make-up dates due to the super storm.
Hurricane Sandy spurred Alexandria City Public Schools to close on Oct. 29 and 30 and now students will have two make-up days. The days for traditional calendar schools will be made up on Feb. 1 and March 8 in accordance with the School Board-approved schedule of weather-related make-up days. The make-up days for modified calendar schools (Mount Vernon Community and Samuel Tucker elementaries) will be Feb. 1 and March 22. The days had been scheduled as student holidays and professional days for teachers.

Some of the biggest names in music will play at a benefit concert on Wednesday. All proceeds will go to Hurricane Sandy victims, via the Robin Hood Foundation.
Huge names in music are lending their talents to Hurricane Sandy relief efforts at the “12-12-12” concert on Wednesday. Every penny sold from ticket sales will go directly to Sandy victims through the Robin Hood Relief Fund, which provides material, money and aid to local organizations that are serving families and individuals in the regions hardest hit by the storm, including over 200 Patch towns in New Jersey, Connecticut and Long Island. No one was injured in bomb discovery Monday.
Drew Cariaso got a special surprise from Hurricane Sandy. Sandy knocked down two large oak trees in Cariaso’s backyard on Roan Lane, in central Alexandria. Both were uprooted, said Cariaso, who is director of curating at Del Ray Artisans. “We thought nothing of it,” he said. “The tree people came out and took care of it, and once it was out, we noticed a small, heavy metal object sticking out of the ground.” Cariaso didn’t think anything about the 24-inch-long, cone-shaped object and threw it aside. On Monday, someone working on his house said it looked like a bomb. 9 p.m. Sunday update — Kristen Gullott said the community "really came out" on Sunday with donations of supplies for Hurricane Sandy victims in Staten Island, N.Y. Gullott and her husband, Chris, filled a 26-foot truck with donated clothing and supplies and will start filling another one on Monday. Dominion Virginia Power crews are working today in the city of Alexandria to restore power to the 1,725 city residents left in the dark. Crews will be at the following locations:
Materials due back to Alexandria Library branches now will be due next week. All branches are open Wednesday.
The Alexandria Library system has announced that materials due back to a library branch this week will now be due next week. Materials originally due from Monday, Oct. 29 through Thursday, Nov. 1, now will be due on Monday, Nov. 5. All Alexandria public library branches are resuming normal hours on Wednesday, Oct. 31. City's trash collection and recycling services on delayed schedule following Hurricane Sandy.
Alexandria is relaxing some of its requirements for the removal of tree debris until Nov. 13 following Hurricane Sandy. City crews will be collecting tree debris from the curb and public rights-of-way over the next week. Residents are asked to place debris on the curb in pieces that can be safely handled and to stay away from any tree limbs leaning on power lines. Downed wires should be reported to Dominion Virginia Power by dialing 1-866-366-4357. City trash collection and recycling services will resume Wednesday with a delayed scheduled.
