Letter to the Editor: Speck Aims to Set the Record Straight

Former Councilman and local PAC member David Speck responds to comments made by Katy Cannady in a recent letter to the editor.

To the Editor: I’m not sure how I got so lucky as to warrant a special shout-out from Katy Cannady, but the quote she refers to was not from me. It was part of a flyer produced by the Securing Alexandria’s Future PAC that had a sentence about each of the endorsed candidates, and I am part of that PAC…along with Vice Mayor Kerry Donley, Councilman Rob Krupicka, former Councilman Lonnie Rich, former City Manager Vola Lawson, former Housing Authority Chair Melvin Miller and many other civic, political and community leaders. To just mention me is to do exactly what Katy accuses others of doing and that is to make an issue about the person and not about the substance. Let me assure you that this was not the first attack piece—not by a long shot…

Gail, while it may be true that not everyone in the Alexandria Democratic Committee is inept, but overall, that's the perception of many Democrats in Alexandria that I know, who have personally given up on the organization. I also believe now that the problems of leadership with the ADC have been exposed, that there are good people working to try to change the 'good old boy/girl network' that …   more ›

Letter to the Editor: Alexandrians for a Livable City Congratulates Silberberg

Katy Cannady, a leader of local PAC Alexandrians for a Livable City, applauds the successes of those she endorsed and for addressing issues like affordable housing.

To the Editor: On behalf of Alexandrians for a Livable City, I congratulate Allison Silberberg for her successful campaign for a Democratic Party nomination to run for City Council in November. Allison attracted a wide array of voters with her message of reasonable discourse and compromise as a part of public policy. I expect her conduct of her office (if she is elected in November) to be gracious and inclusive toward voters. I predict that she will emulate the Hon. Patsy Ticer in her public demeanor.  It is also worth mentioning that in running for Council as a first time candidate, she ran near the top in the order of finish, ahead of two incumbent Council members. We also congratulate our other candidates, Victoria Menjivar, Sammie …

Brac is probably the reason why krupicka lost so bad on aug. 23. They take for granted that educated democrats will fall in line and salute, and vote party loyalty over common sense. They are in for a wake up call... Statistically it would be quite a stretch to interpret the June 12 results as a mandate that Euille inc. has the blessing of voters to stay the course... Perhaps someone can dissect …   more ›

Letter to the Editor: Incumbents Have Not Served the City Well

Rosemont resident Katy Cannady says the PAC Alexandrians for a Livable City has wisely endorsed five candidates, none of whom currently hold council office.

To the Editor: The first Democratic Primary for City Council candidates in living memory will draw many more voters to the polls on June 12 than the party caucus that chose Democratic candidates in the past. The opportunity to run in a primary has also attracted a herd of candidates, 14 in all. We also have three different political action committees (PACs).  The one I help to lead, Alexandrians for a Livable City, believes that decisions made by the incumbent Council members and also those who served on the previous Council have not served our city well. We have endorsed five candidates, Victoria Menjivar, Sammie Moshenberg, Arthur Peabody, Allison Silberberg and Boyd Walker. We did not bestow a sixth endorsement because only these five …

Anytime someone touts the waterfront plan as a source for "much needed revenue" I'm left wondering what has happened since 2001. My property taxes have doubled since then. Have teacher's salaries doubled? Are cops now earning twice what they did in 2001? Are city-owned vehicles twice as expensive? Does it now cost twice as much to maintain a school facility? Just how dire could things actually be…   more ›

Transportation Commission OKs Plans for King Street Metro Redesign

The Alexandria Transportation Commission held a public hearing Wednesday night about a redesigned King Street station. Some residents criticized the plan.

The Alexandria Transportation Commission voted in favor of a modified version of the city’s plan for a redesigned King Street Metro station following a public hearing Wednesday night. The city’s plan envisioned a new station design at a cost of $6.95 million, combining $4.75 million in grants and $2.2 million from the Alexandria Transportation Improvement Program. The commission voted to add shelters at the Kiss-and-Ride area and dynamic message boards for buses to the city’s preferred plan. The commission rejected constructing the project in six phases instead of two to minimize the impact to station operations and installing a brick sidewalk on Diagonal Road as opposed to concrete. The King Street Metro is in the process of undergoing …
