District B Candidates Discuss Teacher Morale

The Taylor Run Citizens Association hosted an Alexandria school board candidate debate Wednesday night at MacArthur Elementary.

Alexandria School Board candidates in District B debated for the second time Wednesday night, with differences emerging in their opinions of teacher morale and the relationship between the board and City Council. The event was held in the Douglas MacArthur Elementary School cafeteria and hosted by the Taylor Run Citizens Association. The event came a week after the candidates met for a debate in North Ridge that offered more agreement than disagreement. That wasn’t the case on Wednesday. When asked about teacher retention and morale, Justin Keating said there’s a “systemic morale problem” despite Alexandria’s teachers being among the best compensated in the region. District B Candidate Forum Scheduled for Oct. 8

The North Ridge Citizens Association is organizing an event for Alexandria School Board candidates.

A forum for candidates running for Alexandria School Board in District B will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 8 at the Beverley Hills Community United Methodist Church, located at 3512 Old Dominion Blvd. The North Ridge Citizens Association is organizing the event. Five candidates are running for school board in District B: Kelly Carmichael Booz, Michael Brookbank, Chyrell Bucksell, Justin Keating and Marc Williams. Williams is the lone incumbent candidate in the district. All five have agreed to attend the Oct. 8 forum. Chris Yianilos withdrew his candidacy from District B in August, citing family health issues. The candidates should address spending within ACPS. While the Superintendent loves to taught the line that ACPS spends most of its budget on salaries, a majority of the public would be shocked to learn of the amount of administrative salaries paid in a district so small. Booz Announces Candidacy for School Board

Six-year Alexandria resident has more than than a decade of experience working with public school students, teachers and administrators.

Kelly Carmichael Booz officially announced her candidacy for Alexandria School Board in District B on Wednesday through a media release. “Alexandria public schools have implemented some effective, fresh approaches to improve educational outcomes, but more needs to be done,” Booz said in a statement. “We need a top-to-bottom review of our schools to build on what is working here and multiply the impact. Alexandria should be leading educational performance results in Northern Virginia, not lagging.
