The Office of Historic Alexandria went through a rigorous process to become one of 69 museum systems in the nation to achieve this special accreditation.
The city’s Office of Historic Alexandria has earned accreditation as a museum system from the American Alliance of Museums – the highest national recognition that an American museum can achieve. "This really puts our museums in the forefront of what it means to be a museum in the 21st Century," OHA Director Lance Mallamo told Patch. "It's so much more than just objects in a glass case." The Office of Historic Alexandria is one of eight municipal organizations across the country accredited for their museum systems. The only other accredited Virginia museum systems are based in Fairfax County and Newport News. Alliance President Ford Bell will recognize the city for this achievement at an event Thursday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., at The Lyceum, …

City's Office of Historic Alexandria has applied for its museum system to become accredited by the American Association of Museums.
The Office of Historic Alexandria got the go-ahead from City Council to move forward on its plan to have its entire museum system accredited. Council on Tuesday approved OHA’s five-year plan as an element required by the American Association of Museums’ accreditation process and authorized the city manager to execute any necessary and related documentation. Of the more than 17,500 museums in the United States, only about 4 percent are accredited and only about 1 percent of museum systems are accredited. The accreditation, which recognizes nationally recognized standards and best practices by the museum profession, would be valid for 15 years. The American Association of Museums has twice accredited three Alexandria museums—Gadsby’s Tavern …

School Board member Arthur Peabody receives endorsement from Patsy Ticer at Lyceum event.
Alexandria School Board member Arthur Peabody (D) kicked off his campaign for City Council on Sunday at the Lyceum by touting changes in the city’s school system and suggesting the role of the city’s Office of Planning and Zoning be re-examined. A two-term member of the school board, Peabody said he was proud of the revisions that have taken place in the Alexandria City Public Schools system since the hiring of Superintendent Morton Sherman in 2008. Peabody said Sherman was hired to make Alexandria “a model” school system. “And with the school board’s support, that’s what we’re doing,” Peabody said. “We have to make the schools better, but we have to ruffle some feathers and change things.” He acknowledged the recent mismanagement of the …

Educational books and a craft activity area will be available for kids on Dec. 3.
The Lyceum is hosting a Holiday Children's Book Fair on Dec. 3, the day of the Scottish Walk Parade. The fair features Usborne Books, a publisher of educational books for children, as well as a children's craft activity area. Shoppers also can donate a book to the Alexandria Tutoring Consortium, a partnership dedicated to tutoring Alexandria’s kindergarteners and first graders in literacy skills. A percentage of the sales will benefit The Lyceum’s education and collections programs, but the holiday book fair gives shoppers the chance to help Alexandria’s youngest students by purchasing a book to donate to the Alexandria Tutoring Consortium. ATC will give the books to students in their program to encourage them to read and develop their …
