Mindful Hands Closing at 211 King Street

The retail store is being forced to leave after a new landlord would not renew its lease. The store's owner hopes to find a new location and reopen in the spring.

Mindful Hands, which has been located on lower King Street for 16 years, is leaving its space and looking for a new spot. The store at 211 King Street was asked to vacate by the end of this month by a new landlord after its previous landlord, Robert Dreifus, passed away in early January. Mindful Hands’ lease ended in August, but owner Sally Scime said she was only recently notified that the store must vacate. The new landlord is the trustee of the Dreifus estate. “Our previous landlord was a big supporter of small businesses and grew up in Old Town,” Scime told Patch. “He remembered when Old Town was all mom-and-pop stores. He had his own small business and knew how hard it is to make a living in a small shop.” Dreifus had not raised their…

How can a landlord legally deny the shop December and "after Thanksgiving" sales---the biggest sale times for a retail business? Shame on the executor. What a dope. He could let them stay open and take a percentage of their sales.   more ›

Young Life in an Old Town: Fun Fall Classes for Kids

There is so much for kids to do in and around Old Town this fall - whether you want to commit to a 10-week session of classes or just a workshop.

One of the best things about living in Old Town Alexandria is the availability of fantastic after school and weekend classes for our children. There is so much beyond Saturday morning soccer and ballet! Here is a sampling of offerings in our area this fall: After School Programs at Mindful Hands – Writopia! Creative Workshops for Kids and Teens as well as Whole Me! Yoga and Dance Movement After School Program. Check the Mindful Hands website for dates and times. Art at the Center – Drawing, painting, and printmaking! Classes for children of all ages are offered here.
