New Hope Housing is seeking support for the homeless men, women and children in their local shelter and transitional housing programs this holiday season.
The holiday season is here and that means Alexandria and surrounding communities seek volunteers for many and different causes. The Alexandria Patches are highlighting good causes seeking volunteers during this holiday season. Saturday's event was a benefit for New Hope Housing of Mount Vernon.
Living in Hollywood, network television producer Greg Garcia is surrounded by worthy charities that hold fancy events to support good causes. But when the time came for him to lend a hand, he thought of his hometown roots in Arlington and opted to support a local cause by auctioning off a walk-on role on “Raising Hope” to benefit New Hope Housing, which serves Alexandria and surrounding areas. “I just wanted to continue to support them this year,” Garcia told Patch. “You’re always looking for organizations to help out, and I thought this is one close to where I grew up, and I just thought it would be a nice thing to do.” An Arlington native who graduated from Yorktown High School, Garcia is creator and executive producer of the hit FOX …

Fannie Mae will not host the National Mall Help the Homeless Walkathon next year and has moved to a 'mini walk' model.
Six Northern Virginia nonprofits have allied to put together a regional mini service walk in response to mortgage giant Fannie Mae’s decision to cancel its popular Help the Homeless Walkathon on the National Mall for 2012 and beyond. “We had been thinking about doing something like this for a few years now and we’d already started to do mini walks at summer camps and other activities,” said Judy Pirozzi, director of resource development at Wesley Housing, a nonprofit concerned with affordable housing in the area.
