Jennings Claims Bronze in London

T.C. Williams alum Terrence Jennings captures a bronze medal in taekwondo in dying seconds of his match.

Alexandrian Terrence Jennings is bringing home a medal from the London Olympics. Jennings claimed bronze in the 150-pound weight class in taekwondo on Thursday at the ExCel South Arena 1 in London, defeating Brazilian Diogo Silva 8-5 on a late kick. With the match tied 5-5 late in the third round, Jennings went for a head kick in the dying seconds of the match. Initially, the match official did not award the kick but Jennings’ appeal was granted, giving him three points, the match and a bronze medal. Jennings was defeated in his first preliminary match on Thursday, falling to world No. 1 Servet Tazegul of Turkey, 8-6. Tazegul went on to reach the gold-medal match, which earned Jennings a spot in a repechage pool. The 2004 T.C. Williams …

Bringing Home the Gold

Olympics for the whole family.

Did you watch the Opening Ceremony of the London Olympics?  I’m pretty excited about cheering on Team USA for the next few weeks. The Olympic Games will run from July 27 to Aug. 12, and the Paralympic Games follow from Aug. 29 to Sept. 9. I was a high school kid in Atlanta during the 1996 Summer Olympic Games. Although the games only lasted a few weeks, the fervor started months, even years, in advance. Energy was high, the whole city was engaged in some way and I had tickets. I can remember the excitement like it was yesterday. Having the Olympic Games in my backyard made it easy to get caught up in the spirit of things. But when you’re stuck with watching events on television, all the fuss can seem sort of abstract for a kid. So, how do …

T.C. Williams Grad Heads to the Olympics

Terrence Jennings, 25, has become a taekwondo sensation.

Alexandrian Terrence Jennings is an Olympian. The 25 year old started his journey to taekwondo stardom through a chance stop at a taekwondo kiosk at Landmark Mall when he was 10. At the U.S. Olympic trials in Colorado Springs, Colo., in March, Jennings defeated the reigning Olympic silver medal winner, Mark Lopez, to earn his slot in the 150-pound class. “My goal is for the gold medal,” Jennings told The Washington Post. “That would be the top of the top, icing on the cake. I don’t think there could be anything better than standing on top of the podium hearing my national anthem being played. ... I don’t believe in crying, but I don’t think I’d be able to stop myself. Just thinking about it gives me chills.” Jennings is a graduate of T.C. …

I had the pleasure of working with this very talented young man when he first started in Alexandria. I sent him a message asking him how to donate. He is obviously very concerned with having them with him! He said the easiest way to donate directly so that his parents can come, is to go to any Suntrust bank and deposit it in Terrence Jennings "donation". Please inform the bank that the last 4 …   more ›
