Planners now eye mid-2017 opening date for station.
Elected officials serving on Alexandria’s Potomac Yard Metro Implementation Work Group continued to express their commitment to building a Metro station at Potomac Yard during a meeting last week at City Hall. The group received an update on the progress of an ongoing Environmental Impact Study (EIS) required to build a station. The city will determine a locally preferred alternative between three station designs and locations later this year. Slaters Lane is in the process of reopening.
Update: The gas leak at 817 Slaters Lane has been stopped, and Slaters Lane is expected to reopen in approximately 10 minutes. Westbound Slaters Lane will be opened with one lane only until the gas company completes repairs. — — — — Slaters Lane is currently closed between Route 1 and the George Washington Parkway, due to an investigation of a gas leak at 817 Slaters Lane. Buildings from 821-827 Slaters Lane have been evacuated and temporarily closed until the situation is resolved. Slaters Lane is expected to remain closed for at least one hour, or more. Residents of Potomac Greens are unable to exit the neighborhood until further notice. Calls to Buzz Bakery, located at 901 Slaters Lane, were not returned.

Special Tier II tax district to be capped at 10 cents
Alexandria City Council on Saturday approved an ordinance creating a special tax district for the area surrounding the proposed Potomac Yard Metrorail Station. This Tier II tax would be capped at 10 cents, which would not be levied until Jan. 1 of the calendar year after the Metro station opens. The city is expecting revenues from the first year of these taxes to be about $400,000, according to city documents. The "Potomac Yard Metrorail Station Special Services District" does not include Potomac Greens or Old Town Greens. The metro station will be funded out of a special tax district and private contributions from developers. The city's bond ratings have recently been reaffired at AAA and the rating agencies know full well of the planned metro station.
