State Sen. Adam Ebbin, who represents Alexandria as well as part of Arlington and Fairfax counties, spoke with Patch from the Obama-Biden headquarters in Old Town.
Virginia state Sen. Adam Ebbin (D-30th) stopped by the Obama-Biden Alexandria headquarters in Old Town on Tuesday to work the phone banks and talk to supporters. The office at 1400 Duke St. was a hive of activity. People standing in lines and draped on the floors throughout hallways talking on cell phones, waiting for training on how to canvass voters properly, working the phone banks and helping in other ways. Ebbin told Patch that he’s excited about the great turnout and grassroots enthusiasm. “This campaign is using techniques of the future… by organizing right down to the neighborhood level,” he said, speaking with Patch in a storage room—the only semi-quiet place in the building. “Alexandria and Northern Virginia are so key to the …

The Obama administration turns the spotlight on Port City as an example of how the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act helps small businesses.
Bill Butcher, owner of Port City Brewing, stars in a White House video explaining the difficulties in getting financing to get his business started but how a local bank aware of new government loan programs came to his aid. In the video "Faces of Change: Bill's Small Business Loan," Butcher said he spoke with 10 banks a few years ago and found it "discouraging." The bank that finally wanted to "work with us" was a local bank aware of Small Business Administration loans "that really helped us a lot" and "saved us thousands of dollars," he said. The bank was aware of new programs the administration put in because of the Recovery Act, Butcher said, adding that his business is now growing as is his distributor's business. The connection …

President and first lady dine at the Neighborhood Group Restaurant in Old Town.
It's no secret that the Obamas love Northern Virginia as apparent by the president and first lady's multiple trips to the area and Tuesday night they shared their love for each other at Old Town Alexandria's Vermilion restaurant on King St., reports The Huffington Post. Vermilion on Tuesday evening declined to confirm to Patch the White House Pool report disclosing the Obamas' Old Town destination, but the presidential motorcade and multiple black SUVs crawling through the neighborhood gave it away. Fellow diners also spread the news via Twitter. A couple who said they sat next to the Obamas during dinner called into 94.7 Fresh FM and said the Obamas discussed Social Security, among other things. The first lady ordered red wine and the …

Share your story of the president's visit to Alexandria.
President Obama surprised just about everyone Wednesday when he made an afternoon trip to Potomac Yard to do some Christmas shopping. Perhaps even more unexpected was the president’s second stop at Del Ray Pizzeria, where he picked up three pies before making his exit from Alexandria. Hundreds gathered at both spots to shake Obama’s hand, wish him happy holidays or just share in the moment. If you were lucky enough to partake in the spectacle, please share your experience. Did you get to shake the president’s hand? Did you say anything to him? Did he say anything to you? Did you keep your cool? Or were you that woman outside Best Buy waving both hands above her head screaming the president’s name? Perhaps it all went by in a blur and you …

He stopped to shake hands with shoppers and posed for a group photo with PetSmart staff members. Despite some rain, Obama also chatted with people who stopped to wait for him outside both PetSmart and Best Buy. Del Ray resident Becky Kotuby encountered the president at both Potomac Yard and in Del Ray while she was out running errands with her children, Elizabeth and Thatcher. “After leaving…
