The Rise of the Smaller Wedding

Backyard ceremony in Rosemont featured in the New York Times.

The wedding of Rosemont resident Rosa Brooks to her husband Lt. Col. Joseph Mouer was featured in the Sunday Style section of the New York Times this week. The wedding, which took place in the backyard of Brooks’ home in June, was part of an article titled “The Smaller, Cheaper, Just-For-Us Wedding” about the growing trend of lower-key nuptial celebrations. “For us, it was like a dinner party, but with a ring and someone to marry you,” Brooks told the Times. The wedding took just two weeks to plan and was catered by a local restaurant. Guests included about a dozen family members and a pair of canines. A photo accompanying the Times piece shows the couple and guests in front of playground equipment belonging to Brooks’ children. The Times …

Why say "Thank you God bless?" Just cuz you go to church on Sunday doesn't give you the right to dismiss and belittle someone who has a well thought out and informed comment. Giving it up to God on Sunday, doesn't mean you can hate and shout people down mon-sat. Read what Doug said, his concerns are about safety, which is valid and the crime coming from the store, which is fact. And yeah I've …   more ›

Grape + Bean Rosemont Approved for Restaurant Operations

Market will begin restaurant service and be open until 11 p.m.

Grape + Bean Rosemont received approval on its restaurant permit from Alexandria City Council on Saturday, almost three months after the establishment opened its gourmet market operation on E. Walnut Street. The permit calls for restaurant service similar to that found at Grape + Bean’s Old Town location, with a menu featuring cheese and charcuterie plates, sandwiches, salads and desserts. Beer and wine will be sold for on-premise consumption. The restaurant will have 24 indoor seats and 36 outdoor seats when the weather is nice. The permit says Grape + Bean will move to a seven-days-a-week schedule and be open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. On Saturday, two nearby residents expressed concerns over the hours of operation, noise and anticipated …

Worth the Wait: Family Renovates 1917 American Farmhouse

Four years of renovation lead to livable space in historic Rosemont home.

There was something about the 1917 American farmhouse style house on 210 North View Terrace in Rosemont that attracted Sydnye Pettengill Wiley and her husband, Bill Wiley. The couple, then living in Burke with their two daughters, longed to return to the more urban lifestyle near the Old Town Alexandria area, when they saw the three-level, six-bedroom home at an open house in 1999. “It was a gorgeous neighborhood, and everything was abloom….The house was on a hill and had a nice presence,” said Sydnye, owner of the design firm, Sydnye Pettengill ASID Interior Design. “It was not in great shape, and it was all chopped up with small rooms, like a rabbit warren, but we were captivated by the high ceilings and beautiful old house features.” …

Went in the other day, excited that it was open at last - but only because of the promise of Polyface eggs (per the past article http://delray.patch.com/articles/old-town-alexandrias-grape-bean-plans-to-open-new-location). I was so sad to discover that they only had Nature's Yolk organic eggs, which I can find anywhere. :(   more ›

Updated: Old Town Alexandria's Grape + Bean Plans to Open New Location

Owners plan to open a market in Alexandria's Rosemont neighborhood.

Grape + Bean plans to open a market in Alexandria’s Rosemont neighborhood that will be a “high quality low pretense place,” according to co-owner David Gwathmey.  The building at 2 E. Walnut Street is currently Rosemont Park Market, a convenience store owned by Tung Fat Lau, who is a member of the third Chinese immigrant family to own the store, according to Gwathmey. Gwathmey grew up in Del Ray, worked his way through the public school system and says he feels very connected with the community. He and Grape + Bean co-owner Sheera Rosenfeld recently moved to Old Town from Del Ray. “We think our new store will be an upgrade with the neighborhood and a little more in line with people’s preferences,” Gwathmey said. “We hope to be a …
