The School Board for Alexandria City Public Schools has adopted a fiscal year 2014 combined funds budget of $245 million, a 2.4 percent increase over the prior budget. The newly adopted budget of $244,960,261 includes a 3.3 percent increase in appropriations from the city compared to the last budget cycle. The FY14 approved operating budget is $226 million, a 3.9 percent increase over the FY13 final operating budget. The city’s public school system continues on an upward trajectory in enrollment, which in 2014 is expected to top 13,700 students – an increase of 593 students over current enrollment. Dear Editor, Newly-elected city leaders were recently sworn into office, and seven members of the Alexandria School Board—Mimi Carter, Yvonne Folkerts, Sheryl Gorsuch, Blanche Maness, Helen Morris, Art Peabody and Charles Wilson—ended their terms of service. As current and former PTA presidents, we are writing to thank each of them for their work, and to recognize some of the significant accomplishments that they achieved during their tenures: While many challenges remain, our school division as a whole is markedly stronger than it was five years ago, and is on an upward trajectory. Each board member is assigned to work closely with at least two ACPS schools.
Each Alexandria City School Board member is assigned to work as a liaison to at least two public schools. Members also serve on board committees, community task forces and other organizations. With the newly elected School Board, some of the assignments have changed recently. For example, School Board member Bill Campbell has been assigned to Lyles-Crouch and George Washington, serves on the Budget and Audit Committee and works closely with Councilman John Chapman. To the Editor: As a candidate for ACPS School Board last November, it was my pleasure to get to know many of my fellow candidates. We found during the campaign that we have much more in common than differences; we all want the best education possible for our children. And though I was not elected, I have formed many new associations and friendships. Our new School Board has seven new members, and seven of the nine elected candidates are teacher endorsed. Alexandrians are fortunate to have such a talented and strong board. I’m sure that I join all Alexandrians in wishing them the very best as they meet the challenges ahead. Michael Brookbank

Several new Alexandria City Public Schools board members were sworn-in Wednesday evening, along with two re-elected members.
A swearing-in ceremony took place Wednesday evening for incoming school board members Kelly Carmichael Booz, William (Bill) Campbell, Karen Graf, Patricia-Ann (Pat) Hennig, Stephanie Kapsis, Justin Keating and Christopher (Chris) Lewis, along with re-elected members Marc Williams and Ronnie Campbell. Alexandria Circuit Court Judge Nolan Dawkins officiated the event at the Minnie Howard campus of T.C. Williams High School. Mayor Bill Euille congratulated the new board members, saying there are challenges ahead. (See attached video.) The ceremony was followed by a Alexandria City School Board meeting. At that meeting, Karen Graf of District A was elected School Board chairwoman and Justin Keating of District B was elected vice chair.

The new members of the School Board for Alexandria City Public Schools will be sworn in this week.
The Alexandria City School Board installation ceremony will be at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. The ceremony will take place in the auditorium at the T.C. Williams High School Minnie Howard Campus, 3801 W. Braddock St. A called meeting to elect the officers will follow at 6 p.m., and a reception will follow the meeting. The new school board includes six first-time members and just two incumbents. At 7 p.m. at T.C. Williams, the new City Council will be officially installed. In the November election, Democrats maintained control of city hall. Gail, what's REALLY sad in all this, is that the Alexandria City Council, with many newly elected members, and the Alexandria School Board, also with many newly elected members, as well, will all continue to play the sad game of 'see no evil, hear no evil, and speak no evil', and they'll sit on their hands as if the City of Alexandria has the best schools in the Commonwealth, which we all know … more ›
