District A candidate Scott Gordon lied about holding a PhD from Virginia Tech.
Scott Gordon is dropping out of the race for Alexandria School Board. On Monday, Patch revealed that the Del Ray resident and District A candidate lied about holding a PhD in psychology on a questionnaire he filled out for the Alexandria Political Action Committee for Education. In a June 27 conversation with Patch, Gordon said he recently earned a doctorate in Industrial and Organization Psychology from Virginia Tech at a satellite campus in Arlington County. A representative from Virginia Tech’s Department of Psychology said Monday there is no record of Gordon attending the school. Another representative from Virginia Tech told Patch that the Psychology Department has no offices in Arlington. Gordon sent Patch the following statement on …

Alexandria School Board candidate Scott Gordon said "in a moment of weakness" he claimed to hold a doctorate in psychology.
Alexandria School Board candidate Scott Gordon lied about holding a PhD in psychology in a questionnaire he submitted to the Alexandria Political Action Committee for Education. The PAC endorsed Gordon’s candidacy in District A last week. He posted the completed questionnaire on his campaign website. When asked for comment…

Superintendent Morton Sherman writes in a letter to neighbors and colleagues that the school system is "on the cusp of becoming exceptional."
Alexandria City Public Schools Superintendent Morton Sherman has moved to curb growing concern over the direction of the school system with a letter to colleagues and neighbors calling for families and the community to have confidence in ACPS. “You work in a school division with wonderful challenges and opportunities, and which is also recognized as being on the cusp of becoming exceptional,” Sherman wrote. He outlined program reviews as “ongoing, methodical and transparent” as ACPS releases relevant reports to the School Board and community, noting that the most recent reports on facilities and adult education revealed “significant systemic flaws.” A facilities report showed mismanagement and dysfunction within the system, fingering two …

Former City Council candidate Scott Gordon calls for Alexandria City Public Schools Superintendent Morton Sherman to resign.

To the Editor: In light of recent events and editorials regarding the blatant mismanagement of funds and programs with the Alexandria City Public School system, I am writing today to appeal to Superintendent Morton Sherman to resign his seat and allow our city to rebuild the crumpling infrastructure at ACPS. When I was in the race for Alexandria City Council, one of my chief concerns was the remodeling of an aging democratic ideology within our government and the subsidiaries of it such as ACPS. Though no longer a candidate, my concerns remain. We first saw Superintendent Sherman’s lack of vision as he, along with many members of the ACPS School Board, presented a budget representative of a future of severe mediocrity, and see it again now…

Alexandria Republican City Committee Chairman Tom Fulton says he has 'full faith' in the ability of Councilwoman Alicia Hughes.
Alexandria Republican City Committee Chairman Tom Fulton says Alicia Hughes is a committee member “in good standing” and admits he has “full faith in her ability” as a member of Alexandria City Council. Fulton’s remarks came in response to a statement made by former Republican council candidate Scott Gordon, who announced his resignation from the ARCC on Tuesday after dropping out of the race because of family health reasons. Gordon wrote on his website that his resignation from the ARCC was in protest to its “continued support of Alicia Hughes, who (and this is entirely my opinion and in no way representative of any attempt to provide fact) is so morally and ethically challenged, whose character is so questionable, is unfit to hold office…

Candidate also leaves Alexandria Republican City Committee citing incumbent Independent Alicia Hughes as the reason for his departure from the committee.
Republican Alexandria City Council candidate Scott Gordon abruptly resigned from the race for a seat in City Hall on Tuesday evening, citing a family medical issue and endorsed a Democrat for council. “This is 100 percent due to an emerging family medical issue,” Gordon told Patch. “There is no other reason. Family above all else comes first.” Gordon made the announcement on his website. “I urge you seriously to consider—as I make this endorsement—to fully support both physically and financially Mr. Sean Holihan, a member of the Alexandria Democratic Committee," Gordon wrote. "Sean is trustworthy, loyal, caring, sympathetic, intelligent and a real civics expert. I believe no other candidate, Incumbent or otherwise, is more suited to serve…

Scott Gordon, a Republican candidate for City Council, says putting one party above all else represents a scary proposition for Alexandria.

I remember our first all-out, full-family political battle at the dinner table. My mother, a hardened Democrat, and my father, an investment banker and the type of Republican that truly believes he can do more with his money than the federal government can. The differences in opinion were dramatic. One believed it was our duty as a financially stable household to do whatever was needed to help those with less. The other believed our taxes could be put to better use, solving humanities problems in the long run without raising taxes. I grew up sitting between the two. The discussions were incredible. There were, however, two things they agreed upon: We were not endowed with the omniscient knowledge needed to pass judgment on same-sex couples…

Don Buch, West End resident and vice chair of the Beauregard Corridor Stakeholders Group, says Gordon is ill-informed about the Beauregard Small Area Plan.

To the Editor: After close to two years of community meetings discussing and evolving the draft Beauregard Small Area Plan, it was a surprise to find a new face turn up at Monday evening’s meeting. It was even more surprising to find how authoritatively this new face seemed to feel he could speak to what he had determined were shortcomings of the Plan. Then the next morning we read his conclusion that “The Beauregard Small Area Plan is a Disaster”. Come to find that the new face belongs to none other than Scott Gordon, who apparently intends to run for City Council. One skeptic pondered whether Mr. Gordon’s sudden new-found interest in the West End might in any way relate to his political aspirations. To suggest that Mr. Gordon was loud, …

City Council candidate Scott Gordon questions the city's intent to provide affordable housing in the area and expresses concern over other issues related to the plan.

Dear Editor: As some of you may know, I voiced an opinion about the proposed Arlandria Re-Development plan that praised the concept, the new tax revenue, the revitalization of the area and the addition of developer funded affordable housing units. As this Op/Ed progresses, please keep in mind that as the developer in Arlandria adds affordable units, it is not tearing a single one down. Just hours ago I returned from the Beauregard Small Area Redevelopment Planning meeting. As was made public, six different developers are planning a phased demolishment of multiple buildings to make way for high end multi-family buildings meant to revitalize the area and, presumably provide housing for the 6,000 or so new BRAC-133 employees; in essence, this…

Republican City Council candidate Scott Gordon offers his views on the approved redevelopment of the Mount Vernon Village Center.

For years now, I have been a proponent of two things: The addition of affordable housing in need-based communities and urban revitalization through the use of approved zoning ordinances and special use permits. Sometimes, one is impossible when the other exists, but not here, not in Arlandria. Arlandria represents a culturally diverse community consisting of small businesses supported by subsidized, low-income and middle-income housing that plays a key role in the economic viability of its surrounding communities and of the City of Alexandria itself. I have recently been afforded the opportunity to review the recently approved proposal to redvelop the Mount Vernon Village Center in Arlandria and, based on that scope of knowledge, I wish to…
