A late March snowstorm across the DC area dumped 1 to 4 inches (and counting) of snow across the region late Sunday night and Monday morning.
Most schools in Alexandria are closed for spring break, but city offices and facilities will be open as scheduled Monday despite the early morning spring snow. Unscheduled leave is permitted for employees. Emergency personnel must report as scheduled. Federal government workers also must report on time Monday. The city did cancel the monthly scheduled meeting of Alexandria Housing Development Corp., which was to be held at 6 p.m. Monday at 801 N. Snow was expected to continue for several hours Monday morning, though it would have an increasingly difficult time sticking to the ground as temperatures rose. It's still officially winter and Mother Nature might deliver a reminder on Monday, according to the National Weather Service forecast. Expect a rocky start to the week with a possible wintry mix of snow, sleet or rain Monday that could make for longer commutes. Here's a timeline of what to expect from the snow expected to hit late Tuesday and Wednesday, according to Meadows: A "rain-snow" line will determine which areas see more snow than others, Meadows said. A sunny start to the week could turn quite wintry by midweek in Northern Virginia, according to the National Weather Service. The Capital Weather Gang predicts a 70 percent chance of 1 inch of snow Tuesday night into Wednesday night, a 45 percent chance of 5 inches or more and a 10 percent chance of 10 inches or more. A Capital Weather Gang reader suggested the name "Snowquester" for the possible midweek winter storm, in honor of the financial sequester that has hit the federal government. Temperatures will warm up into 40s by Wednesday.
The big chill in Northern Virginia continues through Tuesday night with highs in the 30s on Monday and Tuesday. Expect cloudy skies during the days and a possiblity for snow flurries Monday and Tuesday nights, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures will feel much colder Monday. Wind gusts up to 25 mph will continue through Monday afternoon. As a result of the wind, the National Weather Service has issued a Small Craft Advisory until 3 p.m. Monday that includes the Potomac River. This means that wind speeds of 18 to 33 knots are expected to produce hazardous wave conditions for small craft. A very small amount of snow may accumulate Thursday night and Friday morning across Alexandria.
Weather forecasters are predicting snow will start falling after midnight with accumulations up to an inch possible across Alexandria, according to the National Weather Service—a huge change from Wednesday, when the high temperature at Dulles International Airport was 72 degrees. Thursday night’s low temperature will be around 31 degrees, and high temperatures Friday will not be higher than 35 degrees. Because this snow is driven by a “clipper” system, it is very unlikely our area will get more than a dusting. About an inch of snow accumulation expected.
There’s a winter weather advisory for the Alexandria area Friday. The advisory is in effect until 9 p.m. Friday with the NWS predicting about an inch of snow accumulation. Alexandria City Public Schools has canceled all of its evening activities. Roads are expected to become snow covered and slippery with hazardous travel conditions during the afternoon and evening. UPDATE: Sunday, 7:30 a.m.—The National Weather Service says Northern Virginia has a 50 percent chance of seeing a mix of rain and snow starting after 1 p.m. on Sunday. The NWS predicts we will see less than a half-inch accumulation. The NWS forecasts a 40 percent chance of snow for Northern Virginia, same accumulation amount of less than a half-inch, falling before midnight.
