Gowell Selected as Torpedo Factory 'Artist of the Year'

Gowell has been a Torpedo Factory artist since 1991. She works in woven fiber art and kiln-formed glass.

Friends of the Torpedo Factory Art Center has named Ruth Gowell as the “2013 Torpedo Factory Artist of the Year.” Gowell has been a Torpedo Factory artist since 1991. She works in woven fiber art and kiln-formed glass. The annual competition recognizes outstanding achievement in art, with the honoree receiving a cash award and the opportunity to exhibit in the Torpedo Factory's Target Gallery. Alison Sigethy was the runner-up.  The juror for the 2013 award was J. W. March150 Fundraiser Unites Target Gallery, March of Dimes

The organizations have partnered to offer a week-long fundraiser focusing on the arts.

The Target Gallery and the March of Dimes are partnering to raise money for both organizations through a week-long exhibition fundraiser, March150. The exhibit will feature more than 200 10x10 panels of artwork created by artists from the Torpedo Factory and the DC-area as well as from 14 T.C. Williams High School members of the National Art Honor Society. The works will be shown in the Target Gallery from March 9 through March 17. Each work will be on sale for $150 with 10 percent of each sale donated to the March of Dimes. The work will be at a reduced price of $100 per piece the night of the Art Party on March 15. The party, which runs from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., requires tickets ranging from $15 to $20. As part of March150, the March of …

Viewfinder: Old Town Alexandria

Kids get creative at an activity inspired by abstract artist Tory Cowles at the Torpedo Factory's Target Gallery.

On Saturday afternoon, children were invited to create their own abstract paintings inspired by Tory Cowles' solo exhibition, Living LARGE! at the Torpedo Factory's Target Gallery. Cowles, an abstract painter, is the 2011 Friends of the Torpedo Factory Art Center Artist of the Year. Cowles’ background was in three-dimensional work such as stonewall building, woodworking, interior design, architecture, and carpentry, and her paintings were representational landscapes and portraits. When she started painting abstracts, she was able to incorporate the challenges and appeal of her previous three-dimensional work onto the two-dimensional canvas.  Her exhibit, which runs through Aug. 14 at the Target Gallery, presents a series of abstract …
